Serj writes in a poetic manner, so his lyrics don't flow like typical lyrics. Daron's lyrics, however, are pretty juvenile and pedestrian (ex: Vicinity of Obsenity).

I recommend Cool Gardens, Serj's book of poetry. Excellent stuff, accompanied by some really cool artwork.

How was his solo record? The tracks I heard were pretty good.

Serj wrote the lyrics for Vicinity Of Obscenity. In fact, the lyrics for the wackier/humourous songs are usually written by him.

I thought his solo record was pretty good. It definitely would appeal to SOAD fans. If im not mistaken I think he does all the vocals on it and most of the instruments.

Correct. He did most everything besides the drums, which John from SOAD did most of.

One thing about Serj's solo album that makes it so great is its depth. On the surface it seems really basic, and it is compared to the quirkiness of SOAD. But Serj has more going on in his songs. Where Daron comes up with highly original riffs and song structures, but his lyrics and melodies are more basic, Serj is the opposite. His music is more basic, but it's got deeper layers; and his lyrics and melodies are very unique.

I love his solo album, and I grew into enjoying most of Daron's work on Mesmerize and Hypnotize. So I'm looking forward to his Scars on Broadway project.

Cool track. Daron sounds better, more controlled. I dig it.

SoaD are lame.

I wanted to put more thought into this put-down, but then I realized that there was no point to doing so. Sure, I -could- have painstakingly culled an amusing pun/insult based on some lyrics, but what would be the point? At the heart of this matter is that SoaD are lame, have always been lame, will continue to be lame when they get back together, and will probably be lame when Daron kills Serj for being a better (here I use the term 'better' to mean 'marginally less awful') singer than him and the ensuing trial results in the band breaking up.

I see your personal life still sucks.

I appreciate your concern, but I am actually much better now then I was when I frequented this board.

So naw, my personal life is a-ok. But SoaD still blow. That's something that doesn't change with the times.

I think Ken's full of it. Most of Serj's lyrics are absolutely nonsensical.

If in it you mean superior knowledge, then you're correct. Either way, Daron wrote the lyrics to that song. His shit is about as trite as it comes.

You guys heard Scars On Broadway yet? It's Daron's upcoming project:

I LIKE SUICIDE
STONER HATE
ENEMY

Those are live rips. I know a lot of people hate Daron's vocals, but I think these songs sound excellent. "Enemy" sounds like it belongs on a Primus record.

You're right. I could have sworn Daron wrote that shit. Superior knowledge.

Used to hate them just coz they were popular, then I sat down and really listened to the albums. Now I love 'em.

Go read a few interviews with Serj and you'll see why I suggested he's a little messed up.

Goddamn. I just downloaded the Scars on Broadway album, and it's fucking awesome! Daron is such a ridiculously good songwriter! Daron's vocals are great, too, much stronger and more controlled than on the SOAD albums. He still hits a few whiney notes now and again, but overall he sounds great. And I grew used to his whiney style anyway.

Anyway, a very diverse album. Much more dynamic than any SOAD album, I think, and better than Serj's solo album. And that album was excellent!

I hate to admit it, but Daron's singing does grow on you after a while. When I first heard him on Lost In Hollywood, I thought he sounded like Kurt Cobain's evil twin. But after listening to him a couple more times, I found that he actually isn't so bad. Although he's better on Hypnotize than on Mesmerize.
