Brahmsky?

On a suitably TV-related note, been watching The X Files recently, and boy is it spooky. Was suitably freaked out just now going downstairs in the dark to reGuinness, yet the straw hat that I'm currently wearing is a great comfort.

*has thread idea*

Is this historically accurate, Brahms? Funny how Conn Iggulden presented Brutus as an Arnie-clone fighting machine and here he's a spoilt toff.

Ahh, sorry, never saw this. Yes, Rome is generally historically accurate. There are some minor details they get wrong. For example, in the first episode both Pompey and Caesar are consuls, when Caesar's desire for a second consulship after the war in Gaul (his first had been ten years before), and his opponents attempts to stop him and bring him to trial, was actually one of the causes of the civil war- similarly, Pompey exercises a non-existent consular veto. Probably the worst historical inaccuracy is in the show's depiction of the Ptolemaic court in egypt as a purely Egyptian court, when it was a mixture of predominant Macedonian culture and some Egyptian mixed in. But yep, generally, its accurate- especially compared to anything else about Rome out there on TV or in the movies. Anyway, Brutus was much more likely a stuffy aristocrat than a Conan like figure- he was a pretty bad general, anyway.

Oh, and remember: NEVER BELIEVE ANYTHING CONN IGGULDEN SAYS. Ever. He couldn't figure out Roman naming conventions (ie: Nobody would have called Caesar "Julius".... ever) and he pretty much butchers the late Republican period in just about every way. If he says that something is true, your instinctive reaction should be to believe the exact opposite.

Anyway, have you gotten past episode 1? I hope you're enjoying it. I know some people who needed a few episodes before they completely got into it- then there are Roman nerds like me who fell in love when they saw the first episode.

Yes, up to ep 5 or 6 now. Like it much better, esp the multi-stranded plot. Trying to drag it out a little, as there seems to be only 2 seasons available, and season 1 took me long enough to find...

Wouldn't call it the best show on TV, but it was definitely quite good, and got much better at the end of season 1 and throughout season 2. It will be missed.

Anyone know why they cancelled it twice? After the first cancellation the fans pulled together and brought the show back, I figured it'd stay on. I guess the low ratings killed it both times.

Ya, they pulled it back after the fan outcry, but only gave it seven episodes as a kind of test- but the ratings still weren't good, (though online they were... the old ratings system needs to go) and so they pulled it again.

Yeah, BSG is amazing and it's great to have it running again. Despite the fact that I think it's the best show on TV I'm still glad they're ending the series with this season. They could've kept the show on for 8 seasons if they had spread the storyline over more episodes. Instead they've packed each season full of incredibly exciting episodes with very few fillers.

Iggulden stated a dozen times that he just wanted to write books based LOOSELY on the events that historians consider truth. He never said he wrote a perfectly correct history book, it's fiction for fuck's sake.

I hope Moonlight doesn't get cancelled, i LOVE that show and pretty soon i will have to watch the first season of Reaper as i've only seen a few episodes, but i enjoyed what i saw. I've also heard that Dead Like Me or something was also good (can anybody comment on that?) But right now, i'm currently in the process of watching all five seasons of Angel again, because i can't get enough of it.

I love Dead Like Me. It was one of my favourite shows and it was getting really interesting just before it got cancelled. Unfortunately there are only 2 seasons as far as I can remember.

Started and Finished watching Bones season one last week, currently watching Bones season 2.

Love the series and the character development is awesome so far.
Man, Emlie Deschanel is so gorgeous. That green eye/red hair combo is killing me.
:P

Its historical fiction. Which I think means that you have to make sure that what you're writing is at least on the macro scheme historical. Nowhere does it say on the books that they're "loosely based on history with lots of changes"- they're marketed as novels of Rome about what really happened. The historical fiction author has a duty to essentially not lie when he has to. I mean, if I wrote a book about George Washington where his brother was Abraham Lincoln and they went to Britain and destroyed the monarchy, my book would likely be called bullshit and a piece of trash.

Thats why I respect Guy Gavriel Kay. He wants to write about certain time periods, but he also wants to change things around. So he makes a parallel world. The emperor Valerius is clearly supposed to be Justinian, and Sarantium is pretty much 6th century Constantinople, but hey, he wanted Justinian to do things that he never did, and things to happen that never did; so no harm done.

And Iggulden's books just suck anyway. Very badly written.

Just finished third season of Beauty and the Geek. A reality show where babes and geeks are teamed up to widen their horizons.

Mindless fun.

Halfway through the first series of Entourage, and it's not bad, but does it get better? Kinda dull so far, although I'll probably finish the series just to see if thingy and the one who looks like Kiera Knightly hit it off... Jeremy Piven's character needs a bigger role to make it truly watchable.

It gets way better. Entourage is one of the best comedies on TV. The second season is probably the best one. Unfortunately it gets pretty bad towards the end of the forth season.

Just finished with the 6 episodes of the cancelled series Drive. I truly do not understand why such an exciting and original show could be cancelled. Nathan Fillion is one of my favourite actors, but his shows are always prematurely cancelled: Firefly!!! I really hope his next venture is more successful.
