Holy shit. I started Mass Effect the other day and it's fucking awesome...
And Oblivion is an amazing game, recommended to anyone...actually, it might be my favorite game ever. I really want to start playing it again but for now I'm addicted to Mass Effect...
I'm not much of a RPG player because pf my incredibly short attention span when it comes to RPG's. Is Oblivion (Elder Scrolls IV) something that may finally pull me into the world of RPG's?
I picked up a promotional booklet at Gamestop the other day and I read a piece in it on
Mass Effect. That game looks incredible. I'm glad to hear that you like it so much. That helps solidify my purchase of the game. I was also leaning toward picking up
Gears Of War. Have you played that one yet? That looked cool.
Does anyone know anything about
The Orange Box? I know it has a bunch of games in it that look damn interesting. It's on sale this week at BestBuy for $39.99. Is it worth it to pick it up while it's on sale?
Well, I dunno...I don't play trad RPG's either and I love Oblivion. I think I might be more tolerant of them now, but I used to not be able to stand them, at that was the case when I started playing Oblivion. The thing is that even though it's a huge RPG, the combat system isn't turn-based; if you don't know what that is, it's when you tell your character to do a move and then he does it, and then the enemy will do a move, and then your character will do a move, and so on. You actually fight in Oblivion, which made the task of creating and leveling up a character 1000X more fun.
That said, I don't know if you'll like it

. Even though the combat system is fun and exciting (unlike most trad RPG's, IMO), the scope of this game is so huge that it's really not something you can just "pick up and play" from the start. That's my only gripe with this game, that after the intro thing they just kind of drop you in the world with nothing to do--you have to take some time to figure things out. For a non-RPG player, though, I would say that Oblivion would be a good place to try things out.
As for Mass Effect, it's another RPG that actually has a fun combat system, although it's third person shooter as opposed to first person sword fighting. I'd say Mass Effect is an equally good RPG for non-RPG'ers to play, maybe better than Oblivion. Even though Mass Effect is fucking huge is as well (hell, you've got the whole universe to explore), from the start it's MUCH more linear and fast-paced than Oblivion, where you can basically do whatever you want.
Gears of War is a great third person shooter with an awesome cover system that makes the game. You should like it.
Orange Box is great fun as well...it's a great value with three great games in one package--Half-Life 2, Portal, and Team Fortress 2. Team Fortress 2 is one of the best online games out right now. I think you'd really enjoy this one as well.
Funny that I actually have all the games that you're talking about...
