I find all the "if Cliff hadn't died, the band would have remained tr00" speculation to be nonsense. Cliff was the member of the band who listened to the least metal- the space and hippie rock found on Orion is due to him. And really, back then, you wouldn't have expected any of the bandmembers to go in the direction they did- who's to say Cliff would have been any different?

That's a very interesting point. I wasn't born back then, but I'm sure noone expected Metallica to sell out back in '83. On another interesting note, I wonder how things would have turned out with Dave Mustaine? We'd have a lot less wah-wah, that's for sure.

>but I hardly listened to Metallica until well after I was into metal and it is damn good thrash.

But there was really nothing at all to it. Nothing new. Nothing interesting. A lot of whining and doing angry poses. Crappy, slow, and meaningless solos. It's not like they have ever had any actual technical skill. And Cliff is worshiped only because he's dead. He was okay, but nothing special.

I don't know. Maybe I've just been spoiled by listening to bands that actually play well, and I'm not a depressed alcoholic, and I'm not into pop metal, so I can't get an appreciation for Moronica.

Or maybe thrash isn't supposed to be very intelligent, so Moronica would be great thrash.

Anthrax and Megadeth were always a lot more interesting, though.

I don't know a whole lot of Bassists that could have pulled off Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth). Lemmy probably, Peter Steele maybe. For a Bassist Cliff was a really good musician. Metallica would have more than likely gone down the same path if Cliff hadn't died, but that doesn't change the fact that he was damn good at what he did.

Tankard is living proof that Thrash doesn't necassarily have to be intelligent to be good.

I agree with that. I've always said that Overkill are the true kings of American Thrash as well, with Destruction being the heads of the German Thrash scene. I get pissed off at the insane amounts of press that gets heaped on the Metallica camp myself, but they did put out some good music. Kill Em All is still a kick ass album, but that's due to the fact that Dave Mustaine wrote it. It's also not Metallica's fault that Overkill blew the original advance they got for Feel The Fire on booze and thus tallica was able to beat them to the punch with Kill Em All.

Oh, there's no question that Metallica has been overrated, both in the Bay Area Thrash scene and in thrash in general. Kill'Em All and Ride the Lightning are indeed great thrash albums, but they're great thrash albums in a sea of great thrash albums- some of which are better. Hell, Heathen, who play in a similar style to Metallica on Victims of Deception, completely blow them out of the water- as UltraBoris on Metal Archives puts it, Victims of Deception is the album Metallica would have released if they hadn't sucked.

Overkill may have blown their chances at fame, but they're far more metal than Metallica will ever be. Blowing your advance money on booze ist krieg. And Overkill is definitely the best of the American thrash bands (Kreator beats out Destruction for me, though).

Oh yes, and Tankard is intelligent metal. Their cogitations on beer, dying with a beer in your hand, killing aliens who steal your beer and hangovers are truly illuminating.

Forbidden are my favourite US thrash band but thats because they were the first band from the genre that I could appreciate so I'm probably biased towards them.

Which I guess explains why Cliff was often credited as the brains behind Metallica's classic instrumentals of the 80's. I suppose if Cliff were still alive, we'd at least get more of those now. To Live Is To Die, Metallica's last instrumental, was actually a tribute to him.

I think maybe Cliff would have left if he was still alive. Or they'd have just rehashed MOP into the ground.

True, and even if Cliff was the metallest member of the band would he have been able to influence them? Jason Newstead listened to more metal than the other guys, and look what happened while he was there.

Why do they always have to sound like something? Can't they just sound like Metallica?

Actually, After the release of 'Ride the Lightning' some of the fans accused them of having sold out.
Which is easy to hear, since they went kinda more "mellow" on Lightning than the straight-forward thrash that was 'Kill'em all'
