I'm yet to find anything remotely groundbreaking that Kamelot have done, that hasn't already been covered somewhere else.
Calling something "groundbreaking" is of course rather subjective. However, I think they qualify as such due to having a sound not one metal band in the world is even CLOSE to matching and for reaching emotional and downright
dramatic qualities previously unheard of in metal. [/fanboying], yes, but anyways it's pretty apparent that Freedom Call, HammerFall, Edguy and Firewind don't even set out for making music that interesting. Like Holy_Terror put it, they stand on the shoulders of the giants and reach success by playing it safe. Now you can do that and still be a good band, but it's still something that seperates the great and visionary bands from the clone bands that make the genre go under, because eventually people will get tired of it. Not that you have to be as ambitious as Kamelot to be interesting, but those four bands just don't have enough to offer in such an oversaturated sub-genre.

But who cares if a band isnt doing anything groundbreaking musically...if you like what you hear, then thats all that matters.
That's a given, but at least some of us can only take so much of the same old stuff before it gets boring.

I'm just not a fan of Kamelot's structure. Slow verses, where Khan is almost just talking the lyrics, then a mid-paced chorus. Granted its not always like that, but a great deal of their songs are. It bores me.
You mean you'd like their songs to be faster? Hey, personal preference of yours, sure, nothing to argue about. However, if you're implying that Kamelot's song structures are the least bit more formulaic than those other four bands (not 100% sure you are, but if), well, that's just plain ridiculous.
