If there is one SX album not to get it's their debut s/t album. Now that one sucks because:
a.Russell Allen isn't in it and their first singer sucked
b.It's poorly produced
c.Lyrics are cheesy for SX standards
People are always so hysterical about saying this one sucks, i don't think it does. The singer isn't the best no, and i can sort of understand why people hate him. But imo he isn't that bad, and he shouldn't be compared to Russell. Rod has his own style and i think he fits together with the lyrics, makes them come alive etc. He does a fine job on many songs like Shades of Grey, Raging Seasons etc. I don't think they would have the same feel if Russell sang them. And how are the lyrics cheesy btw? I think their pretty interesting for the most part.
As for b. well i don't think the music suffers from the poor production, i think it makes the album a lot more gritty and raw and i think it works, the S/T is arguably their heaviest album. Add to that that it's also probably the most proggy one.
Different strokes for different folks glad to see someone likes it because I sure don't.
But then again there are those who like Kamelot's first 2 albums which I don't like because of the lead singer was a poor version of Midnight and keep in mind that Kamelot are my favorite band.
When you are used to one peticular singer it's hard to accept another one regardless if he was the first singer or a replacement(hence the hate for Owens in Iced Earth).I didn't care for his vocals and not just because he wasn't up to par with Allen it's just I didn't care for his voice.
But hey to each their own.
