Yes, they aren't bringing anything new. But I would say by contribution to music, it need not be something new, but just contributing to music by churning out albums that are acclaimed by fans and/or critics. Of course, many may argue that Maiden did go thru a lean phase and probably still haven't come out of it. I feel Maiden definitely have contributed in a huge way and continue to do so.

Probably the biggest influence on metal, yes, you can hear them in almost any metalband in some way. Still, it's their old albums that have been the influence, their later album are just more of the same.

As you say, I'm not sure that 'Maiden would be too over the moon about receiving awards from the mainstream press etc, but I can't think of a more influencial or deserving band that's come from Britain since The Clash/Sex Pistols.

And if anyone said to me 'what about Radiohead, Coldplay or Oasis?' I might shed a tear before going all Manowar.

I'd go for Radiohead because they've evolved being an alt-rock band.

Killing Joke? Joy Division? Godflesh? Hawkwind? The Fall? My Bloody Valentine? Primal Scream?

True indeed. But on the other hand, Maiden as well as their fans all know off the contribution they have made, and it doesn't take a mainstream award to recognize their accomplishment.

For example, in terms or musical value and influence, Maiden would be wiped out by the Canterbury scene anyways. What's left of it.
