New Haunted was pretty good, imho. And Katatonia rule.

Booers! the new Haunted blowed.

Fair enough if you don't like The Great Cold Distance, but as for the worst album of 2006!? The concept of someone saying that when there's some far more *cough* deserving candidates about I find truly shocking.

Hmmm, Katatonia or Countime? Nah Katatonia was definately worse. :omfg:

Biggest disappointment is one thing, but flat out worst...? Come on.

You bring up a good point, but I was just saying the worst album that I actually heard all the way through. I'm sure if I had to sit all the way through something like The Arctic Monkeys's or Muse's new album I would hate one of those more, but I turned them off after 3 songs :].

I take back what I said about 10,000 Days being Tool's best too, I can't decide between any of their last three albums, they all appeal to me when I'm in a different mood. I still love the epic-but-grounded feel of 10,000 Days (I'm glad Adam Jones mentioned that in an interview because I was starting to think I was the only person who noticed that feeling on albums).

By the way, good band! I've only just got into these guys in recent months, but I love the start to No Heroes - the thrashy, manic 60 second each first 6 songs. First time I heard it I was like, 'Crikey, this is gonna be the shortest 'album' ever!'

Quality!

haha yeah, those 6 kick more ass than basically any other 10 minutes of music I've heard. One thing I found kind of confusing is why they put the punky/hardcore songs like Orphaned after all of the awesome stuff. That part of the album always just feels like an epilogue after no heroes/plagues/grim heart black rose.

I think that Converge are certainly are pushing boundaries further than a lot of 'art' bands I've heard in a while. The album's so diverse, I think you're right in saying that the contrasting style of Orphaned after that opening and the doomy monster Grim Heart / Black Rose kinda make you go, 'ey? what's just happened?'

Vengence, at 58 seconds, probably the best 'short' song I've ever heard (but I know you know this, I guess it's for the sake of people who haven't heard this disc and the even more essential 'Jane Doe'). I did have to have a stiff drink after hearing No Heroes for the first time though!

Oh, and the Tool thing. I actually spun this album a few times more over the weekend. By all means, it's still a disappointment to me, but I think I will retract 'Worst Album of 2006' to 'Most Disappointing'.

I'm with Ogami on this one. I don't think 10,000 Days is Tool's worst,(that goes to Undertow) but Lateralus is clearly Tool's zenith in my view. I feel it has both the most great Tool tracks of any album (The Grudge, The Patient, Schism, Triad) and the single greatest thing they ever wrote: Lateralus's title track(HM 10,000 days title track and 46+2).

I see that you essentially agree with this point about Lateralus having better songs, but I don't agree with your view about 10,000 days being constructed better. I find the contrast between various tracks simply too jaring, and much of the 2nd half of the album is a stuggle for me to get through.
You're smart.

You are much too kind.

Then how about this:

You're right, at least as far as this debate is concerned.

I personally think that Aenima has better individual songs than Lateralus but the interludes prevent it from being a cohesive piece of work. I don't think 10000 days is Tool's worst, the first eight tracks are great. It's just a shame the last two are so poor, and I think from here on in the returns shall surely diminish.

P.S Listen to Lateralus on the HDCD format is was intended to be listened on. Fuckin' huge

Aenima for me is their finest work, but agreed about interludes. In some ways I can see Adam Jones having a meeting with the rest of them that went like this-

Adam: 'Look, I'm telling you, the album's too perfect, we're gonna end up like Nirvana, and the media's been after another one of them for ages. We'll be fuckin' pestered by those motherfuckers and I wanna live in peace with my anatomy models'
Maynard: 'For sure, I've got my royalties from Green Jelly, I'm cool. Besides, this side project I'm working on will be twice as big as Tool...'
Justin: 'Wibble?'
Adam: 'Cool, it's decided then... let me just have one more go at the mix... Has anyone seen my sound effects volume 3 vinyl anywhere?'

It's funny 'cos it's true!
