I usually say prog-rock. That seems to register a lot clearer with people than black/doom metal, which people have trouble understanding it as something totally different from Cannibal Corpse or even Mastodon.

Uuuumm ...hmmm...Metal...DUH?

Yeah, I usually say that, or "bands that sound like they're trying to do something cool".

I just say metal, and then ignore everything else they say.

I say mainly electro-pop with a twist of MC Hammer shit.

A little bit of everything...

I say this, but then I follow it with, "...but mostly metal."

Answer with:
"Excuse me but can you repeat this? I'm completely deaf and I have to read lips to understand what people say"

then observe what they come up with...

I don't like this response. Its like when someone asks you to come see their band and you ask what they play and they respond with "oh a little bit of everything, some of its like Coldplay and some of it's like Metallica" (I swear to Buddah someone actually said that to me once).

Anyway I say "mostly heavy metal."

Not metal. Heavy metal.

My response most of the times I get asked this question is the following:
"I listen to pretty much all kinds of music but very selectively. But I'd say that I listen to heavy metal a little bit more than other kinds of music."
That's my usual response.
