I've heard that these guys are a pretty good band, but I searched them on MR and they've only got like two CD's scored in the 70's...so I was wondering where you guys would recommend to start with these guys, since I'm fairly sure they have more CD's than the two reviewed.

Check out the "I" EP. If you don't like that you probably won't like anything they've done.

I also love their Catch33 album but its really abstract and inaccesible so starting with it is probably a bad idea. The reviewer here kinda missed the point of the album :\

Start with Destroy Erase Improve. I don't know if I'd say it's their best album, but it's definitely the best starting point as it is the most accessible. For the record, I think Nothing and Catch Thirty Three are underscored on this site. Also, there are bound to be plenty of posts that say something to the effect of "Meshuggah is boring", but I think you should give them a shot. I would personally place their albums in this order:

Nothing
Chaosphere
Destroy Erase Improve
I (an EP containing one 20+ minute song)
Catch Thirty Three

All those albums rate mid 80's to mid 90's in my book. Hope that helps.

TRY before you buy. I dislike this band immensely; I think they're terrible, but many, many people disagree. I do feel, though, that my opinion that they're not a very accessible band is accurate. So I would suggest getting a good listen before spending your money.

Cannot go wrong with Destroy Erase Improve.
As Adam said it's their most accessible album.. After that try Nothing, the I ep and the rest of the discography! Great band!

what about Rare Trax? i heard "War" from that compilation (i think) and it's the awesomes, but completely different from the other songs i heard from them (a handful).

is Rare Trax in the vein of "War"? and do they have more albums in that vein?

I didn't like Rare Trax, though I only listened to it once. It does sound different than the rest of their stuff, which might be the reason why.

Adam is correct about this quite enjoyable band. I'd start with DEI or Chaosphere.

I'd put their albums in this order:
Chaosphere
Destroy Erase Improve
Nothing
Contradictions Collapse
Catch Thirty-Three

In response to Eyesore: I went and checked out this band on MySpace before making this thread, and I liked what I heard so I decided to put up this thread. Just for the heck of it, though, I went back and listened to a few tracks after reading your post; I didn't like them as much, but I can see how this would be a band that you have to be in the mood to listen to.

Anyways, thanks for the recommendations. Destroy Erase Improve looks like the best place to start--not at the top of my list, but I'll keep an eye out for it.

My list is like yours except like...flipped... so that I is at the top.

Hah, I find them pretty interchangeable though. Ask me on a different day and the list would be very different.

I have Contradictions Collapse but I really don't like it that much. I prefer the monotonous, chugging Meshuggah on Nothing.

I haven't heard anything by them either. I think my buddy has something by them, so I may have overheard him listening to them. I'll give them a whirl.

Catch 33 is the first thing I heard by them, and I think it's still my favorite. I didn't find it inaccessible at all; in fact, I find it more accessible than other "one-song albums" like Light Of Day, Day Of Darkness by Green Carnation or Crimson/Crimson II by Edge of Sanity. The way it mutates and flows is very organic (despite the riffing itself). It's interesting to listen to, especially late at night.

Yeah, before I had someone who opposed to the ritual living with me, I used to listen to Catch 33 every night before I went to sleep because it would keep me up for its whole length then I'd fall asleep during the last half of Sum.

I recently tried to get into them aswell. I started with nothing, and its pretty damn good. It took several listens to fully appreciate it though.
