I'm telling you dude. Jazz is not even close.

I'm not talking jazz. What do you all consider classical music by the way?

The usual. Beethoven, Brahms, Bach, Wagner, Orff (you can't tell me those last two aren't the great-great-great-times-whatever granddaddies of metal, at least in the spirit it embraces), Mahler, Mozart, Grieg (Savatage anyone?), Rachmaninoff, Mussorgsky (how much more parallel do I have to get here?)...that sort of thing.

Ok, that's the usual, now there are several genres that get a lot closer to classical music. First, there is music that you will likely not consider classical music, I do, but it sounds very different from what you understand from the term: dodecaphony, serialism, tonal music ,phenomenons like Cage and ragtime alike music (Nancarrow). Then there is music that is hard to recon as classical music, as it doesn't use 12 notes to an octave: microtonal music. That often includes totalism. Totalism sprang from minimalism, the same goes for post-minimalism. Minimalism as a subgenre of classical music is widely denied by critics, composers and teachers. The genres of totalism and post-minimalism therefore too. I'm not even talking about spectralism, Indian "folk" and some obvious composers in the filmscore genre, Yann Tiersen, Morricone for example. I also agree with Noodles point on progressive rock.

Yeah, filmscoring and industrial/dark ambient would be up there too.

EDIT: I think the best example of the huge difference between classical and metal is listneing to a metal band, listening to maudlin of the Well, then listening to Kayo Dot and realizing how totally different they sound.

This is just Misha's weekly post on how much smarter he is than every metalhead because he has moved past it. You folks are wasting your breath on our beloved male model poster.

Respect the snob! (you're right though)

I guess my question to you is: Since you obviously believe that metalheads falsely think their taste in music is well...good, why not take a friendy attitude towards disillusioning us all? You'll win more converts that way, and also not be perceived as an arrogant jerk. Some of your recommendations fell flat with me, but Hawkwind was a real winner. Ultimately I think we all win if you play the role as the friendly "beyond metal" guy that respects other people's taste here but tries to gently turn us on to less limiting music, and not the guy constantly sniping at metal and its fans.

No, I don't think metal is not good, I'm not sniping at metal. But you all seem to think that it's really close to classical music, which it is not (with some exceptions of course). If you like classical and metal, and you think there is nothing closer to classical music that metal, you are very unlikely to look for anything else. There is tons of music out there to be discovered, that's all I'm telling you with this discussion. You might consider "classical" to be a compliment, and therefore think that my denial of the closest thing to it being metal is an insult to metal, but you forget that I don't see "classical" as a compliment, actually, the less it's related to anything, the more respect I have for it. Metal comes from rock, the first bands are clear examples of that, and the classics are almost with no exception very close to (hard)rock. Now I do not deny that there weren't bands that used some classical influences in their music, but most songs are still rock oriented. The fact that we refer to "songs" should give enough indication. I'm trying to follow your suggestion, but I'm not giving random artist/composer/band recommendations, I rather give you an idea about what there is.

Never saw one, it's obviously a joke if that is true. Must be because Italians don't drink anything but run off with the ladies instead.

I think it's usually the ladies who run off with the italians...

I'm telling you dude. Jazz is not even close.

Looking at it again, yes it is. Not jazz in general, as it is extremely broad, but the third stream genre is so close to classical music that it is almost classical music. It's still a jazz subgenre though...
