I don't really find Dime's guitar playing that good, but it might be because I don't really like Pantera as a whole and never really listened closely... And Zakk>Dime. No discussion there.

@rio: i have a lot of respect for jazz musicians because of their influence on good music, but all of the jazz I've heard focuses too much on soloing. And I can't stand improv because it tends to be like 25% genius, 75% boring. :/

Well, I can't imagine which improvising musicians you've been listening to that are genius 25% of the time and boring the rest.

It's very easy to complain when a genre uses a lot of soloing, but only if you think about it in a very one dimensional way. How does the rhythmn section react to the soloist? How does the soloist respond to what the rhythmn section is doing? This is what jazz is based on, and this is what the group synergy you referred to means. What it does not mean is technically precise musicians that play exactly the same things to the note every night.

I dunno, my listenings to jazz have been really weird since its all been either from my mom, from some guy who uploads free jazz stuff via soulseek, and some John Zorn that Misha sent me. I can see the appeal in hearing something that was totally new for everyone at the time, but I'd rather listen to the result of the band jamming a whole bunch and assembling the best sections of their jam sessions into songs than listen to the jams themselves. I just meant synergy by the instruments each playing a part that complements the others, rather than all playing the same thing and then topping that off with either a solo or vocal line.

Not a legend?

Quote:
Reuters reports that rock 'n' roll legend Elvis Presley ceded his crown to NIRVANA lead singer Kurt Cobain on Forbes.com's list as the top-earning dead celebrity.

The list, published on Tuesday, said grunge rocker Cobain earned $50 million between October 2005 and October 2006. Presley wound up in the No. 2 slot with $42 million, down from last year's $45 million.

Forbes.com bases its dollar amounts on licensing deals for using the deceased celebrities' work or image in advertising or elsewhere.

This was Cobain's first time on the list in its six years of publication. Presley has ruled the roost since its inception, said Forbes.com staff writer Lacey Rose.

Cobain's coup was due to his widow, actress and singer Courtney Love, who sold a 25-percent stake in the Seattle grunge group's song catalog to New York music publishing company PrimeWave.

By that logic Bill Gates is more of a legend than anyone.

Woo go Bill. :dio:

I know Gates revulotioized the whole thing, I'm not disagreeing with that, he deserves legend status regardless of how much money he makes. But what I was saying was that Kurt Cobain's multi selling records do NOT grant him legend status. A legend should be someone worth idolizing, imitating. Anyone with a week of guitar lessons imitates Cobain anyways, consciously or not. Didn't you say in another nirvana thread that most of the hit songs were written by his producer and that cobain left to hs own devices (In utero) is crap? I can't remember the exact thread or post, or if it was even you, but someone said that...

True legendary status is involuntary and has nothing to do with whether or not someone "deserves" to be idolized. Idols and legends aren't the same thing. When someone is destined to be remembered for a few years of work decades, if not centuries after their death, they become legendary. It doesn't matter if they did things not worth remembering as well. Should the fact that Elvis basically OD'd on a toilet keep him from being a legend? No.

Frigid, you can invent in your own mind your own idea of what a legend is to you, but it doesn't change who real legends are and what they become legends for. Not all legends are loved by everyone, and not all legends did all great things. Some did very few great things. It's their affect on the community that makes them legends, not the artistic or practical merit of their work. In fact, by definition, legends can be exaggerated and falsified. Some people are legendary for things they didn't even really do. It doesn't matter. We are not in the position to decide who is a true legend. They just become.
