What are the best indie bands out there? I am kind of ignorant, actually very ignorant about this genre...

So enlighten me! :D

Me too... for me indie stops after Blur's 13 and is interchangeable with the term britpop.

I like The Paper Chase... I'm not really sure if they're considered indie though. Sort of like all of the prentention and ambition of prog minus the musical talent... it sounds like music a serial killer or inasne person would make.

Well the only indie bands i know are
Bloc Party (which i think are ok)
Artic Monkeys (meh)
Interpol
Arcade Fire
and that's it..
The other bands maybe have indie influences but are not 100% indie.

Ash isn't bad if you're into mid-90s Nirvana style alternative. Otherwise, I don't really listen to a lot of indie rock.

Stay the hells away from that flavour of the month (or last couple of years) crapzorz.

I recommend: Idlewild, Pavement, Pixies, Teenage Fanclub (technically TFC are pop, but 'meh' to that).

I'm no expert but the above bands are all cool.

didn't the term indie mean indipendent? Like not signed to a label or anything?

Years ago it did. It was used to refer to bands that were way too abstract to be marketable to a mass audience. Now people are trying to pass the term off as a genre, which is ridiculous.

Franz Ferdinand are pretty good.

There are lots of pretty good Aussie Indie bands. I shall return after researching a bit.

No they fucking well are not. Awful, awful shit. Really bad. Few bands have music that makes me as angry as them. Fuck, i'm getting pissed off just thinking about it.

I don't get why, but I don't dig most indie bands, maybe it's because they're too poppy...

Same, a lot of it just seems to be slightly experimental pop. Anyways heres some bands that are considered somewhere in the indie/post-hardcore/neofolk area of things:

The Arcade Fire
Iron & Wine
Wilco (for Misha: Their guitarist Nels Cline's free jazz guitar solo work :P)
Neutral Milk Hotel
Aereogramme
These Arms Are Snakes
Minus The Bear
Architecture in Helsinki
Slint
Mogwai
Surfjan Stevens
Modest Mouse

i probably got a few names wrong since I haven't actually heard a few of their bands, just heard people talk about them on rateyourmusic

Yeah, there are some good names there, but I personally don't see why the good names are indie rock :P like Mogwai, Neutral Milk Hotel, Aereogramme, Arcade Fire...

I prefer to call it underground rock, but I'm a big fan of the following:

Shellac
June of '44
Zeni Geva
Tar
A Minor Forest
The Jesus Lizard (older stuff)
Fugazi
Slint
Don Caballero
