Come on, dude! This is 2006 where Wikipedia makes things fact! Chaos A.D. is a nu-metal album. Earth Crisis are a metalcore band. Machine Head have always been nu-metal. Avenged Sevenfold is power metal, and Death is melodic death metal.

Well, they don't play Gothenburg, but Death's later albums has a lot of elements that I've considered melodic death metal (eg. having melody and playing death metal lol). And they sound about as close to Dark Tranquillity or At The Gates as Arsis or Carcass - Heartwork does, and those are called melodeath. Being Swedish and ripping off Iron Maiden aren't my main prerequisites for the genre :P

But if that's your definition of melodeath then it makes it too broad to have any meaning. It's just a useless term. Whereas under everyone else's definition it signifies quite as specific way of playing, so it is a useful term.

Obviously those aren't the only two things that make something melodeath...

For me, At The Gates was lacking intensity and passion wheras Dark Tranquillity simply oozes emotion.

ATG wins!

Or at least, they do in the poll to which only me and Jaden are invited.

Dark Tranquillity. ATG get the nod for almost single-handedly inventing the genre, but I like DT better.

And noodles is still wrong. Death are not melodeath, not by a long shot. Cannibal Corpse use plenty of melody, but I think Fischer's neck would eat you if you said that CC were melodeath (seriously, have you seen that man's neck? Jesus Christ.). Also, Carcass are only melodeath post-Heartwork (my favorite of theirs) and after. They were grind on Symphonies and Stench and grinding death on Necroticism (my second favorite). Heartwork itself still has a little too much edge to it to be true melodeath (despite being awesome). It was only on Swansong that they really started making melodeath as we know it today. "Keep on rotting in the real world...."

Exactly. If the word "Death" wasn't in the genre name it would be afforded a lot more respect.

I fully agree. Except for the vocals, it has very little in common with death metal. It should be recognised as a distinct metal subgenre, not a death subgenre.

Let's start a petition

Those are the last things DT is missing.

See I think Canopy sit between the two - just more proof that genre tags aren't absolute.

If it wasn't for your vocals I'd probably lean more towards older-style melodeath, but you're more like a traditional DM vocalist than the more shrieky guys like Lindberg.
