Yep, it's time to finally get the overall consensus of Nirvana here at Metalreviews. Are (were) they a "hit" or a "miss"?

Although I don't at all hate Nirvana or even really dislike them, I ultimately voted "Miss." Yeah, they may have killed glam rock, MC Hammer, New Kids On The Block, etc. But what was the replacement? Bush, Hootie and The Blowfish, Blink-182, etc. Pretty much every shitty alternative/pop-punk band since about 1994 has owed at least a little to Nirvana for their sound. And even the better/good alternative bands like Weezer, Offspring, and even Green Day borrow heavily from Nirvana.

Plus, their music is generally too vague for me to really use as mental background music. I mean Come As You Are's lyrics sound like they're about friendship/acceptance, and yet its main riff somehow reminds me of walking through an Office Supply Store (like Office Depot). Smells Like Teen Spirit reminds me too much of an episode of Saved By The Bell (actually, come to think of it, most of Nevermind's music reminds me of that - In Bloom reminds me of the SBTB cast at the beach, for Christ's sake!). Radio Friendly Unit Shifter has Kurt Cobain sounding like one of the "dumb jocks" he often rails on. And so on.

Granted, they have some good songs (Serve The Servants, Dumb, the aforementioned In Bloom, Very Ape, etc). But overall, Nirvana's a Miss (albeit a fairly high-grade "miss") for me.

I vote miss. No really in detail reason as to why, I simply just dont like their music. I own Nevermind and I gave it a 2/5 on my rateyourmusic thingy.

I can't stand Nirvana. They killed glam metal (good music) and made grunge and pop/punk popular (bad music). Kurt Cobain is overrated and wouldn't have become the shitty depressed-teenage idol he is now if he hadn't blown is fucking brains out.

I'm not gonna repeat my anti-Kurt rant, but because of Nirvana, the good Grunge bands like Soundgarden and Alice in Chains get a bad rep among Metalheads.

I did like Nirvana for ages but all the bullshit that goes with them put me off quite a lot, and I haven't listened to them in a long time.

Woo, I'm the only hit. I remember liking them a few years ago and I played In Utero today and it entertained me. Overrated though I guess, although pretty much all popular bands are so meh.

I don't hate them with a violent vitriolic passion, I just don't care for them.

I get the feeling that you guys are saying "miss" because of what they did for (or "to", depending on how you look at it) music rather than their music itself.

Still a miss for me. Yeah, their songs are entertaining enough, but I would never buy a CD from them.

Well, that's possible, I guess. Highly unlikely, though.

+1 ... They were mediocre and overshadow real good bands as Soundgarden (Badmotorfinger is a great album)

Miss, I liked them when I was ten, but then I grew out of the kiddie music stage and now listen to music about dragons and warriors. I've grown up so much.

Wrong. I dont like their music. I dont like his voice. And I dont like people making up excuses as to why someone doesnt like a band when some people simply just dont like them.
