Dark Tranquillity are my favorite melodeath band! I really, really hope they incorporate some more of that Projector experimentation again!

+1

Projector kicks ass, but that could be said about any of their albums.

I'm totally new to them. What's their best album would you say?

Projector is my fave, but if you were a newbie I would recommend Haven first, it is just so damn catchy and his growls are so good, then I would go straight for the Gallery because songs like Lethe just own you.

If you don't mind kind of off kilter clean vocals (think Katatonia but not as good) get Projector next.

Shit, all their stuff is top notch, I wish In Flames could have kept it going as well as these guys (IMO so Ken doesn't start a flame war).

Dark Tranquillity were better than In Flames even back when In Flames were great.

No arguments from me.

I never thought they sounded enough alike to even compare. They were just the two biggest melodeath bands, so people did compare. I find both bands to be great in their own way, too different to compare.

Yes, you've got a point there. However, if a comparison must be made - and it's usually In Flames fans that will start it, from my experience - then I'm gonna vote for DT, eyes wide shut.

The point is, is that Dark Tranquility as consistently made great music no matter how they have changed their sound, where as at some point In Flames had a drop off in song writing ability and seemed to not be able to decide if they want to be what they always were (A very good Metal band iwth harsh vocals) are the Sweedish Metalcore kings of American Metal tour packages. I haven't hear Come Clarity so I don't know if they are still lost or they got back into the groove after STTYE dissapointed me so much after what I thought was a great new sound on Reroute to Remain.

Anyways, In Flames was always dumbed down, fun Melodic Heavy Metal where as DT was thinking mans Melodic Death Metal.

BTW I am a huge fan of both, just not STTYE, I play albums like Whoracle, Gallery, Clayman, Haven and Projector once a week usually.

But hey, lets not forget Arch Enemy (pre tits in the band) as one of the greatest (if not the best) Sweedish Metal bands of all time. Burning Bridges, Stigmata and Black Earth all fucking rule.

Arch Enemy aren't Swedish though. I'd say my favourite 90s melodeath album is Carcass's Heartwork, The Gallery is a close 2nd but isn't consistent enough.

They are Sweedish, only Angela is German, before that when Liiva was in the band they were all Sweddish, the Amott brothers come from there.

From Metal Archives:

Melodic Death/Gothenburg
Lyrical theme(s)
Anti-religion, Rebellion, Society
Origin Formed in Current label Status
Sweden (Halmstad) 1995 Century Media Records Active

Where did you think they were from?

Noodles doesn't listen to metal, so just ignore him.
