I'm thinking I should probably get into Blind Guardian right now. What's a good first album to get?

I'd go with the new one. But I'm not the BG expert.

Somewhere Far Beyond is a good place to start.

It's a coinflip between Tales from the twilight world, Somewhere far beyond, Imaginations from the other side and Nightfall in middle-earth. It probably comes down to what style you prefer. TFTTW and SFB are speedy power metal albums, IFTOS is a bit slower but much heavier and NIME is a lil' bit more proggy and great if you're a Lord of the rings fan.

I'd go with Imaginations myself, but they're all great so you can't really go wrong with any of 'em.

I found it in Taiwan but that doesn't help you much. Isn't it on CM?

My first cd from Blind Guardian was Somewhere Far Beyond which is a good place to start. However, I think Tales from the Twilight World or Imaginations from the Otherside are probably better starts. While Nightfall in Middle Earth might be my favorite, I wouldnt recommend it to anybody until after they've listened through one or two earlier BLind Guardian albums first.

Wow, I thought A Night at the Opera was pretty much their classic...I mean, I know they have lots of other great stuff but I pretty much thought that it was their undisputed best. Anyways, that's what I started with, and now I want to get Nightfall in Middle-Earth...A Night at the Opera is EXCELLENT.

The third album is the best in my opinion. It's heavy, and epic in a strange exotic kind of way. Every song is absolutely killer. it's also thrashy and heavy which is something that was essential to their music. Now it's too clean.

I'd agree on every song being killer if Tommyknockers wasn't there

Get it. This is where they developed their sound IMO.

Yes, it's a good start, it got me into the band as well.

It's a very solid album, but not their best, so while it's good enough to attract you, it leaves you exciting places to go: backwards to the great ideas of Tales From The Twilight World and the energy of Battalions Of Fear or forwards to the magnificence of Imaginations From The Other Side and the complex atmosphere of Nightfall In Middle-earth.

And to whoever said he thought Opera is their undisputed best: do yourself a favour and pick up Imaginations, Nightfall and Tales.

My advice is to buy Defenders of the Crown by Human Fortress instead. At least they don't put you to sleep.
