The soloing on Winter Madness off the Wintersun Debut is really something awesome. Easily the highpoint of the album for me.

One incredible record instrumentally is Cacophony, Speed metal symphony, 1986. It's a masterpiece of music, the guitars of Marty Friedman and Jason Becker are glorious, and bass and drums are great too. The drawback (and a big one) is the horrible voice of the singer. Better than hatebreeder... not sure, but near of course.

Megadeth Rust in piece, Countdown are near too. I second too Death.

And well... as Frigid says Sonata Artica, there's a group I always mention... Cynic.

I like the singer, he's nothing spectacular, but more than servicable, especially for what is essentially a shred album. And I agree, that album shits all over anything CoB ever thought of doing.

best album instrumentally?? Wow, never thought I'd hear that. In any case I think you're wrong but I'm glad to hear that you like the album so much. Good thing people are still passionate about metal.

Best album instrumentally to me would be Satan's Court in the Act. Absolutely flawless rockingly heavy and thrashy guitars with the best soloing on any album save for Breaking the SIlence by Heathen.

Is Nocturnus - The Key a good entry?

Cacophony is amazing, agreed. And so is Rust In Peace. Friedman is a guitar god, no doubt about it. Still, I think Hatebreeder is just a little bit over these too. What can I say, I love that album :D

I'm still working on the suggestions here, didn't dig Dragonforce that much (they's just lightning fast to me). Now I'll try Satan's Court in the Act and the Nocturnus one.

I've always thought of Dream Theater as the best band instrumentally out there...Train of Thought, Scenes from a Memory, and Images and Words are all great CD's instrumentally, especially Train of Thought and Scenes from a Memory IMO. Train of Thought has some of the best instrumental sections EVER (along with my favorite instrumental song ever, Stream of Conciousness), and Scenes from a Memory is a mastery of songwriting...Images and Words is basically both.

Though Countdown is definitely a great CD, I don't really think of it as being absolutely incredible instrumentally...a lot of the verses are simple three chord riffs (Symphony of Destruction...) and the solos, while extremely good, don't make it a great CD instrumentally for me. But, I'm not an expert when it comes to actual difficulty of playing, since I don't play guitar...

Absolutely. Burn the Ground is so badass. And Speed Metal Symphony...awesome.

I also love A Sceptic's Universe by Spiral Architect. All the musicians on that album are incredible.

Im going to say Nattens Madrigal. Not good technically, but some of the best riffs ever. And the most perfect mix ever. Although Hatebreeder is a great album.

Well, comparing is a bit difficult as i think STYLE is an important criteria as well as technique. Here are some bands/albums i've always been impressed with...

Cacophony - Speed Metal
Satan especially 'Blind Fury - Out of Reach' and 'Pariah - Blaze of Obscurity'.
Paradox - Collision Course
Most 'Death' albums, obviously...
Dragonforce, of course...
Symphony X...
Dream Theater...
Hibria - Defying the Rules, compares in style and technique..
Spiral Architect... basically there's a lot of tech-metal bands, too long to list (Meshuggah, Coroner etc. etc.)...

Anyway, it's kind of a pointless argument. There's always going to be a band that's better technically. What's important is the songwriting and how the technicality fits in the context.

I did have the pleasure of watching Children of Bodom live though, and i agree, it's technically a very proficient band.

Wasn't this a discussion about technical proficiency and not how good you think the albums actually are? ;)

I've just downloaded their first album and gave it a few spins.

It's very good, thanks for the tip, I'll keep an eye on them.

But I still think Hatebreeder is better. I don't think it's crazy to think that, just look at Hatebreeder's scores and Wintersun's, Hatebreeder got 3 100's and one 97. So if thinking Hatebreeder's better is crazy, guess I'm not the only one

One thing I have to admit, Wintersun's debut is a lot better than COB's Something Wild. So there's potential there, maybe their second could be even better. Death and the Healing is AWESOME, they have killer melodies here and there, but there are times the drum goes too fast to the point it becomes annoying. And I think Hatebreeder has a lot more catchy riffs spread throughout the songs than Wintersun's. Not only catchy, but heavy and melodic as hell.

Anyway, thanks for the tip, I loved it. Gonna check other bands mentioned here now.

Technical proficiency has nothing to do with how good an album is.

If they couldnt write good music, they would suck, no matter how well they played their axes.

Proving that their axe skill cannot make their albums good. You need songwriting skills, the ability to put emotion and ideas into your music, blah blah blah, etc, etc, etc...........

Thats why i say Nattens Madrigal is excellent. Not technical at all, but it has the best. riffs. evar!!11
