Interesting review.... it seemed a little schizophrenic.. but maybe that was how the album came across to you as well.

First part was all about how they are generic metal core and have declined... and then good things about the first 5 tracks of the album, the instrumental, and commenting on flashes of brilliance in other parts. Then back to the tedium of it all put together.

I have never bought anything by these guys, but saw them at last years SOTU and the bassist was a great performer and it seemed like he was in the wrong band. I felt a little schizo about them after that concert as well... I liked the energy, but hated the music... guess this confirms that I wont be buying anything by these guys any time soon.

I have The Oncoming Storm by these guys as my one size fits all metalcore album. It's actually pretty nice, although there's no way it ever intrigues enough to warrant getting a second record of theirs.

Storm had its moments, and a few killer songs. should've been faster, though.

i'm checking this album out.

Haha. You must like Unearth, eh? I like a ton of metalcore bands. A 65/100 isn't necessarily a bad score, but Unearth offer nothing in terms of separation from the droves of other metalcore bands out there. And they're not even close to being at the top of that heap.

I agree with Ken, Unearth is one of those many generic metalcore bands, but they stand out for some killer songs like "zombie autopilot".

What metalcore bands do you like? If asked, I say I don't like metalcore, but that's just because everything I've heard is absolute shit...and I've pretty much assumed I just don't like it, but I guess there might be a few good metalcore bands out there.

I like Converge or The Dillinger Escape Plan style metalcore. Or the experimental stuff like The Mass, Protest the Hero or The Ocean...

There are tons of excellent metalcore bands out there. Here's are some of my favorites:

CATARACT - WAR OF CULTURES
CATARACT - NOTHING'S LEFT
CATARACT - DENIAL OF LIFE (Video)
ALL THAT REMAINS - THE CALLING
MAROON - WAKE UP IN HELL
GOD FORBID - END OF THE WORLD
HEAVEN SHALL BURN - THE WEAPON THEY FEAR
SHADOWS FALL - DESTROYER OF SENSES *
SHADOWS FALL - WHAT DRIVES THE WEAK *
CALIBAN - THE BELOVED AND THE HATRED
CALIBAN - IT'S OUR BURDEN TO BLEED
100 DEMONS - REPEAT PROCESS *
SLAVES FOR SCORES - BLOOD-SOAKED ANGEL (Demo) *
SLAVES FOR SCORES - BRAND NEW DISEASE (Demo) *
KRYOBURN - REVERSE *
KYROBURN - ATMAN PROJECT
RAUNCHY - JOIN THE SCENE
RAUNCHY - WATCH OUT
RAUNCHY - REMEMBERANCE
STAMPIN GROUND - DON'T NEED A REASON TO HATE (Clip)
STAMPIN GROUND - BEAR THE SCARS
SUICIDE CITY - FUCK YOUR DREAMS (Clip)
BYZANTINE - JEREMIAD *
BYZANTINE - HATFIELD *
DEVIL DRIVER - END OF THE LINE *
DEVIL DRIVER - HOLD BACK THE DAY
KILLSWITCH ENGAGE - LIFE TO LIFELESS
KILLSWITCH ENGAGE - ROSE OF SHARYN

*Not totally metalcore, but some similarities could justify the tag. The tracks in red are a friend's old band who've broken up, they kick ass, though.

Anyway, maybe you can find something you like there? :dio:

I dont even think Dillinger is metalcore, it just kinda got lumped in there by idiots. Good band though.

And to confirm it, Unearth sure are pretty popular, but pretty faceless and dont do anything to rise out of the standard metalcore fare.

Cataract are pretty good too. Dillinger and Converge aren't really metalcore as most people think of it, but they blend metal and hardcore so yeah :P

I actually liked Unearth's last one, and the samples sound alright, so I'll have to check out the rest. As for metalcore in general, off of Ken's list, Shadows Fall and All That Remains are awesome, God Forbid was good until the latest album, the rest, well......no.

Boooh! Did you listen to all of them? And Unearth's new one isn't bad, but in the evolution of metalcore they do enough to stay afloat, but not enough to get out of the water and walk on land.

Cataract are badass, though. I love those guys. So brutal.

I listened to the ones I hadn't heard before. Metalcore is a strange genre for me. When I like a band from it, I can't really pin down the reason why. Cataract are okay, but that's it.

I hear ya, it's the same for me. Why do we like one band, but not another when they're essentially not very different at all? A weird, annoying genre indeed.

BUT, Dillinger dont mix 'boys together' straight edge hardcore and melodeath, so its technically not metalcore :P

Haven't had a chance to listen to everything yet, but there are definitely some solid songs in there. The only ones I've heard before are the Killswitch Engage and Shadows Fall songs, and those are actually pretty good--for a long time Rose of Sharyn was one of my favorite songs (I'm not saying I don't like it anymore...saving you the time of another rant). Your friend's band IS good, by the way.
