Am I the only one that thinks that music completely loses its heavy feel as soon as a piano, or even worse a goofy synth comes in? Unless they're used sparsely/subtly/not as a lead, it seems to me keyboards only make music sound fruity or weird. The best evidence I can think of for this is comparing Zero Hour's debut, which has keyboards, to The Towers of Avarice, which doesn't.

Am I the only one that thinks these forums take a big hit whenever noodles makes a post? Unless he sticks in helheim and can just post random shit that I don't have to pay attention to, it seems to me that he just hates everything good and likes a lot of shit. The best evidence of this is, well, all his posts.

No, but seriously, nothing personal Noodieman. Keys and Metal can work together, but it is a very deligate symbios.

Noodles, I think, started smoking lots of weed in the last few months. Yeah, keyboards can be annoying, but they can also work very well, as evidenced on Zero Hour's debut (you crazy sonofabitch!).

And a piano, now that, for me, never gets old. I'd like more piano in metal! Richard Anderssen, however, takes things a little too far quite often.

And then there's a band like Dol Ammad who overdo EVERYTHING!

keyboard and metal do work together... it's just a matter of what kind of metal it is, and how the keyboard is played.

I think keyboard are good to add atmosphere... and people who use keyboards to make symfonic shit or lame "guitarsoloes" should be beaten to death :)

I love keys, Jon Oliva and the way he incorporates it into his music is simply awesome and lets not forget Nightwish. Oh and about 478 other bands that sound good with them. Yeah sometimes it doesnt fit, but for everytime it doesnt, there is another band where it does, its all a matter of taste.

Wow this is a horrible thread. Keyboards belong in metal like I belong in KLC.

I love the keyboards on Dream Theater albums, and I hate the keyboards on Nightwish albums. Keyboards suck if you base an entire song on them, I think they should be used with some subtlety.

You dirty bastard. Keyboards and metal are a fantastic combo. They add such an atmospheric element (or a nintendo element in HORSE the band's case) and I love em.

I like them when they add atmosphere or make the band sound weird/spacey (best example I can think of is Arcturus), but bands like Dream Theater (+ their 20000 clones) or Dark Tranquillity are way better off without them. Maybe I'm just that way for keyboards the way people are with bagpipes =\

yeah that was a bit of an overstatement since DT use keyboards a bit better than other bands. I still prefered them without keys though.
