A decent album. some tracks stand out like Flesh Storm and Jihad and it is better than God Hates Us All, but I still feel that Slayer's best work is behind them.

They've reached a position where they've done everything they set out to do in the speed / thrash genre and if they start writing new songs in that ilk they just sound like they're repeating themselves. There's only so many times I can listen to Araya ranting about religion before it gets a bit tiresome. On the other hand, when they try to change they come out sounding like sub par metalcore a la God Hates Us All.

I saw a similar thing happen to Fear Factory where they did one thing and did it exceptionally well, however when that one thing becomes exhausted, where do you go from there?

This is the best Slayer release in years and I'm happy with it. It could have been angrier, faster etc. but this is all they could deliver at this time I suppose.

Good review.

the score pretty much sums up everything that's been said before in the forums...

I don't listen to Slayer much, I prefer the 2nd wave thrash like Testament, Annihilator and Overkill, but I really felt this album growing on me. I love it. And the review is great! Just like I would describe it :D

Overkill is actually 1st wave and some argue if they were originators since they were a band since the late 70's, just had a hard time getting a record deal.

I think a lot of the 2nd wave thrash was mostly due to record deals then coming late to the game......

Good review. I've only listened to this once all the way through but it's a fairly solid. Like others have said I think it would be a bit much to expect another album of the quality of RIB a this point.

Sounds like some of the soloing isn't quite up to par on this one.

I like the album though. I like the sound of it. I prefer a nice shiny production job for thrash.

I must say, considering how much praise he gave the album, Jeff gave it an awfully low score.

At least it's better than the soloing on Slayer's last couple albums.

Since the late 70's? So I guess (contrary to popular belief) they DIDN'T get their name from the Motorhead song?

i also like this "shinier" sound.

the album could've been faster, and there are no riffs as killer as in some Slayer classics, but there's still good music there. like Kathy said, the best they could've done at this point.

They formed in 1980, but Blitz and DD had been in a punk band together before then. The name does come from the Motorhead album.

Probably, have managed to avoid listening to those.

80 / 100 is a very respectable score, considering I mentioned in the review, "With the exception of one or two songs, this album is pretty solid!". Being that there are ten songs total and two that were more or less filler, do the math and that is how I came to 80 / 100.

Meh, I tried I really did but it just did not do it for me. I do not think the album sucks or anything but I found it to be a little boring. I guess it was just missing that "something" for me that some of thier other material had. The lyrics are just plain silly now.

Best Slayer album since Divine Intervetion. My fav. track is "Cult".
Those who thought that after God Hates Us All was downhill for Slayer were so wrong.

Good album, but not great. I'd give it a 80/100

Some decent songs, Flesh Storm, Cult and Jihad stand out the most. Lombardo's drumming is great as always. A must for Slayer fans like myself. :dio:
