Morningrise followed by a tie between Orchid and MAYH. I find every post-MAYH album bland except for Delieverence and Damnation if in the appropriate mood. This band was my favorite until Blackwater Park came out.

Possibly my favorite band overall. I love everything in their catalouge. Choosing a favorite seems like an easy task because my mind immediately travels to the beautiful tracks of Morningrise. However, through time almost all of the albums have been my favorite. My first was black water and was my favorite. It was usurped by MAYH for a long time which was followed by Still Life for an even longer time. So for the sake of the poll I chose Morningrise becuase I think it has the most to offer, but I wish I could have selected the whole catalouge.(Well maybe minus Devliverance, not bad, but their most mediocre effort) :D

While I haven't heard anything by them I would actually be willing to bet that Avenged Sevenfold, or whatever, are a way better band than opeth. They sound so amazing.

I got Damnation just today. I still stand by opinion that this is Opeth's best album (regardless of how different it may be). Are there any songs on Ghost Reveries that are like what's on Damnation?

The last song, Isolation years, would fit right in on Damnation. It's a wonderful song, perhaps one of their best.

That would be Ghost Reveries, my only Opeth album :)

I bought Blackwater park today because any other stuff I wanted was full price, and I was in a stingy mood. It's pretty good so far.

Morningrise. Still Life is probably the best album after the first two, but they lost something going into MAYH. The riffs just got lame, the vocals lost their edge and became poor death growls, the improvements in the leads and clean vocals couldn't save the uncompelling songwriting. They seem too wrapped up in being neo-prog to make good music anymore.

Hm, I actually like MAYH. I concur Morningrise to be the better of the two (or of their entire catalogue, Damnation excluded), but you can't help but love songs like The Amen Corner and Demon of the Fall.

You've definitely got me there. MAYH does have some excellent moments and tracks. I guess it's just that it sort of marks that departure from my favorite era, so I think less of it than maybe I should reasonably.

Then get another. I find Deliverance to be by far their most uninspiring album.

Morningrise.

Still Life is more mature, and probably better, music wise, but Morningrise has something magic about it. Something they lost a long time ago.

And yes, Deliverance is pretty horrid.

My Arms, Your Hearse

The opening riff to April Ethereal is probably one of my favorite ever.

I am a My Arms your Hearse guy all the way, I think it is a perfect album.

Don't like anything after Still Life, don't call me elitest, I just don't, it bores me, still a great band though.
