I'm quite a fan of Richard D. James' music. Everything he does, he does great. Pyschodelic Trance, Ambient Techno, IDM. Just about everything; but my favs are the Ambient albums, 1 and 2.

I just picked his latest, the Analord compilation, Chosen Lords, and it's quite cool, as always.

Anyway, anyone else into him?

Selected Ambient Works 2 is among my All Time Top X.
It's like lingering in a power plant on acid. According to James' statement most of it has been composed during lucid dreaming. Well, at least this music is not of this world an has strong hallucinogenic elements.

Richard D James is downright amazing. I use the Ambient works to fall asleep to alot. The dreams those albums cause can be very strange.

I like all of his stuff, I don't own as much of it as I'd like to though. The Windowlicker video is fucking outrageous. The guy is truly maniacally-brilliant. I hear that when he opened for Bjork, he just played a bunch of annoying-as-all-Hell noise set to strobe lights, and that half of the audience was puking. Now that is awesome.

Heard about them through David Firth's stuff, but I still have to check them out.

LOL That IS awesome.

And yes, the ambient albums can really fuck you in sleep. Does anyone know more albums that can fuck with your subconcious while sleeping? I know there's some music that can manage to provoke certain impulses that affect your brain and produce specific brain waves or something. I think it's called Hemisync.

Anyway, the thing is I can't find any artists that specifically work with that. So any recommendations are very welcome.

Steven Halpern is the leading artist. He made a lot of boring New Age stuff, but some works are outstanding. As far as I know Higher Ground is the pioneering work in brain wave induction.
Ambient Techno artists System 7 (http://www.a-wave.com/) is also highly recommended. You can find some theory about alphawaves on their site. From a practical point of view I have never heard anything else that takes me so frequently to "altered states" of mind.

Ulver-Perdition City is specifically made for the stages before, during, and after sleep.
