I'm surprised nobody in this forum ever brought them up (or at least not since I've been here). I'm a little curious about what everybody thinks of them.

Personally, I don't really like or dislike them. Their music was fairly catchy, and In Utero certainly had a lot of emotion, but that doesn't really cover up the fact that they're basically the band responsible for crap like Blink-182, Bush, and Smashmouth (as well as good alternative bands like 90s Weezer and the guilty pleasure that is The Presidents of The United States).

they're really overrated.

For someone who didn't want to write pop songs, Kurt Cobain didn't demonstrate his words with his deeds. Overrated drivel.

I personally never understood why they got as big as they did. The music was sloppy and boring and the vocals were like nails on a chalkboard. I do however wish that Kurt had not killed himself. That way, they would have run their course and eventually faded away, rather than being remember as the musical geniuses that they weren't.

I used to be big on these guys back in the early 90's as a lot of people were. Looking back though, they only released 4 full-lengths (if you count Incesticide). Bleech was probably their best and least "pop" CD. I still haven't really heard anything like that and while it certainly wasn't Metal, it was an interesting take on rock music. Nevermind was actually an ok CD, but they more or less turned into pop-alt rock. The kids could sing a long to almost every chorus despite Cobain's awful vocals, which is ironic. The guitar riffs were simple with plenty of hooks with little experimentation. Good Rock CD, yes, but one of the best of all time as many people claim... not even close.

Then In Utero took the band in a different direction sound wise. Much like Bleech the guitars had a distinct tone but Cobain's vocals were even worse and the guitar playing even sloppier. Not as pop oriented but had some okay songs.

Overall they wouldn't have been as popular was it not for Cobain's death and they just rode a trend (whether on purpose or by accident) and for whatever reason become the fore-runners in the grunge trend (maybe because they wrote the catchiest and most simple songs out of all Seattle bands). Even though Alice In Chains wiped the floor with Nirvana, and Soundgarden and Pearl Jam were far superior musically, somehow people took to Nirvana. Shouldn't have happened but it did. Same reason why every single female that dresses like a slut and can kind of dance gets a record contract these days. Just one of those things in the music world that doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

I agree with crims, alice in chains kicks nirvana's ass. That being said i never was into the whole grunge thing too much.

I really can't stand them, their sound makes me vomit, I hve no clue how they got so popular--probably the MTV hypemachine.

Of all the bands to come out of Seattle in the early 90's, I liked Soundgarden the best. Their first album was really heavy and their second album did some really great experimental stuff. Chris Cornell is a great singer. Too bad he chose Audioslave instead of some real metal band.

For the record, I always thought Kurt Cobain secretly liked all his mainstream exposure, and just pretended he didn't to appeal to rebellious teenagers. I mean, what did the guy do with all the money he made from Nevermind? He bought (or built?) a fricken multi-million dollar estate in the middle of Seattle! That should tell you something right there.

Kings of Grunge were Alice In Chains, not Nirvana. Hell, Alice In Chains had the best grunge vocalist overall anyway.

Fuck Cobain, I'm so sick of his whiny voice, even though he's been dead for more then ten years now. Layne Staley had a great singing voice, great range and emotion.

Alice in Chains is still one of my favorite bands to this day. It's a shame Layne Staley couldn't get off the heroin.

Nirvana were a great punk/pop band and Kobain a very good songwriter...

one thing... Grunge is bullshit ! Tad, Mudhoney, Mother Love Bone, Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Soundgarden... those band have only one thing in common : Seattle ! :evil: some are good, some aren't but none of them were in the business to make money unlike many metal bands... :twisted:

Kurt Cobain can't sing. I don't care what anybody says, the man just can't do it. His voice has a lot of emotion I'll admit, but it's just too gruff and druggy for my to really consider "good."

good doesn't mean technical... what Cobain gives with his voice, many metal singer can't... it's called emotion and it isn't based on so-called skills ! :twisted:

I know, I just pointed out that his voice had a lot of emotion. It's just his actual singing leaves a lot to be desired (though his performance on In Bloom was pretty good).

Soundgarden and AiC were good. Pearl Jam and Nirvana were boring so they became more popular.
