Have just released their new album (the somewhat flashily titled Stadium Arcadium). Looks like those crazy Californians decided to do what the Foo Fighters did last year and release a double album. Has anybody listened to it yet?

The only RHCP I own right now is Californication, which is a very good (if somewhat over-extended) album. Is By The Way good?

I think its pretty good, but overlong (plus all the singles got played to death). Its more pop-oriented than any other RHCP that I've heard.

They're one of those bands that I like songs I hear from, but dread getting a full album, for some reason. I'll probably pick up Californication if I see it cheap. And I've only heard one song from the new 'un, possibly the single, and liked it.

If that's any help... :)

Like Zad, I always like their singles, the new one too, but never bothered to get an album of theirs.

I disagree. There are 28 songs here—not a bad song among them, by the way—and there are songs that cover all eras of the band to the more funky tunes from their earlier albums to the more mellow tunes of late. The band has never been very heavy either way. The guys are older and have clearly mellowed, but they're still awesome in my book. I just wish they'd drop the goofy schtick! It doesn't reflect in the music anymore and their new video is fucking lame! How many times has that been done before? If you like RHCP this album should not disappoint!

On a side note, Flea is amazing! His bass lines are sick!

great band..they have over 15 absolutely brilliant songs and over 30-45 good ones..but the new cd..it dissapointed me..if they'd just took the 10 strongest songs out of 28 and put it on one cd..it would've been a great release

Just a 10 song album? Then people would complain it was too short! I still think the worst song is a good one. Not a bad song on it. There's many more than 10 great songs, though.

Basically my thoughts on it.

I find the songs on the new release range from Great to Good, I was surprised (I mean they have never really dissapointed me before) I thought that with so many songs there would have to be a slip up somewheres, but there just isn't.

Now for the hell of it, rates of each of their albums to see how this new one stacks up for me:

S/T (1984) - 85/100 (Some really catchy tunes here, alot of fun to listen to)
Freaky Styley (1985) - 60/100 (My least favorite from them, some good songs here though)
The Uplift Mofo Party Plan (1987) - 90/100 (Their best album from their early era)
Mother's Milk (1989) - 85/100 (Another solid release, lots of catchy/funky songs)
Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991) - 92/100 (Their sound evolved here, often thought of as their best album, I sometimes agree depending on my mood)
One Hot Minute (1995) - 90/100 (I love this album, songs like: Warped, Aeroplane, Coffee Shop, Shallow Be Thy Game, Deep Kick, One Big Mob, etc.. I dont understand most of the hatred this album gets. Personally I think its their "heaviest" album)
Californication (1999) - 93/100 (Lots of memories attached to this one, so Im abit biased, most people saw this album as a return to form, I disagree with that, but it was nice to have John back on guitars)
By The Way (2002) - 90/100 (Very mellow compared to any other album, I kinda saw this coming after Californication though. I love every song on this album, but sometimes it is hard to listen to them all at once because of the mellowness)
Stadium Arcadium (2006) - 92/100 (This score may change by next year, I dunno, but right now I love this album. I actually dont think my score will change, these are very strong songs. It feels kind of like an overview of their entire career.

I find One Hot Minute to be their worst album. I don't dislike it, but I think it's their worst. Navarro just had a different style. The Uplift Mofo Party Plan is awesome! Come on, when you're like 15 years old, "Special Secret Song Inside" is fucking great!

Anybody read Scar Tissue (Anthony Kiedis' auto-biography)? Very entertaining read.

I still haven't heard the new double album yet but I sure as hell hope it's better than By The Way. I like maybe 3 songs on that album....

If you take the mellowist bit of Californication, and extend it out into a whole album, thats by the way. So not nearly as good.

The new single is ok, but a little more melancholy/mellow-ness and it would be aesome imo.

I have Californication, UMPP and BSSM. The latter is the best IMHO.

FLAR! Four letter acronyms rule!

I really like their ludest songs. Sir Psycho Sexy is probably my favourite work of theirs, hahaha.

Californication I have. I usually fall asleep when I reach Porcelain though. I've heard it all the way through only a handful of times.

Chili Peppers caught stealin a Tom Petty song. I actually thought Dani California was one of the worst songs from Stadium Arcadium, so I dont really care. I will admit that there is a striking resemblance though. Wow.

Here is the article:

And the MP3 comparing the 2 songs side by side:
