Well, if you like Arjen you'll love The Human Equation. Welcome to the forums. :D

True true. The Dream Sequencer is unbelievably good. Laid back and atmosferic, but great. The only complaint is that Arjen didn't use Edlund some more :( My House On Mars kicks all sorts of asses.

I love Flight of the Migrator just as much, but in different ways, especially Scheeper's, Dickinson's and Deris's songs. The whole Universal Migrator album is just awesome. On the other hand, I really don't like The Human Equation.

Star One and Ambeon are pretty cool. I'm yet to listen to the other Ayreon albums.

I think the problem with The Human Equation is James Labrie, he's a great vocalist, but on an album that is essentially about emotions he sounds quite emotionless.

Actually, it's the only performance of his that I think he does well. Ayreon could have chosen better, but he does pretty good (if he did that well on Dream Theater albums I might actually like them)

I love both UM albums. From the very Gilmour-esque solos of Dream Sequencer to the Jon Lord-esque keyboards of Through The Wormhole, I love this album through and through.

Human Equation is good, I just can't stand LaBrie's whining vocals.

Space Metal is also a great album, Set Your Controls is one of my favourite songs.

"Set Your Controls" reminds me of Boston (the band). Anyone else hear it?

I hear what you mean, if only a little bit. If Boston turned a little more metal. Like this, perhaps:

I only own Star One and The Human Equation. I think Star One would appeal to metal listeners more, as the overall sound is much more bottom heavy then everything else he's released. I like Arven's work, but there's just too much filler in my opinion. If you interested in checking out Star One (hopefully your a space/sci-fi fan), I'd suggested listening to these songs, as I feel that they are the best ones off the CD:

Master of Darkness
The Eye of Ra
Sandrider
Starchild

The Human Equation is good (great story), but the Cd can be quite expensive as it spans two discs and a special edition is available. This becomes a problem when considering the fact only a few songs are memorable and can stand on their own merit. Yes, the other songs are not bad when combined with the rest of the album, but the concept novelty will wear off (it did for me anyway), so you won't be listening to songs 1 throught 20 on a regualar basis.

I recommend listening to:

Day Three: Pain
Day Eight: School
Day Eleven: Love
Day Fourteen: Pride
Day Fifteen: Betrayal

I'd avoid listening to:
Day Sixteen: Loser

Good god do I hate this song. The musicianship is good, but I can't stand that voice! He sounds like a drunk rodeo clown...

Dude, the best part of the album is at the end of that song. I agree, it's kind of weird and Renaissance-like with the riff, and the vocals aren't amazing, but when Devin kicks in at the end it's like a heavy metal orgasm!! Holy shit!

Yeah, that part is cool. I'll agree with you there, but it's not enough to save the entire song, with him screaming for 10 seconds or so. A lot of people seem to like that tune, so my loss it would seem.

I have The human equation and into the elctric castle. Both are magnificant as far as i am concerned.

James Labrie bothers me a little bit on it, but lcukily he doesn't really sing nearly as much as you would expect with him being the main character, and a massive draw for Dream Theater fans. I don't think Arjen should have been the singer of "best Friend". He is a great writer but i think his vocals are a little weak. I would have liked to hear devin on this album more, but what can you do, there aren't really many places for hims to be screaming like he does in loser.

Noodles- why would you want Arjen to be involved with dillinger escape plan. I don't think there styles mesh at all and Dillinger is terrible they couln't even be saved by Arjen.

This opinion comes from seeing them on the gigantour.

It's not my favorite, but that ending is sick. Also, the version on the single has an extended mid-section with a guitar and keyboard solo wankery-fest, which is really cool.

Technically, you probably heard Devin more than any other singer! =) He recorded 25 vocal tracks per song! YIKES!

Yeah, I definitely wish the character of Rage was more prominent in the story, like, Arjen could have made this guy a piece of shit in the story, then Devin would have had more room to get crazy. =)

Some news there. Basically, Arjen went through some depression for a few months; quit Stream of Passion, though they'll continue without him (word); and he's currently working on a new sci-fi themed Ayreon album. Good stuff.

I was kind of wondering where Arjen had been.

I just couldn't get into The Human Equation and after that I turned this guy off, thinking that he was a ridiculously overambitious wanker. But I've decided to give him a new chance. As far as I know, he has a crapload of bands and projects. Could some of you guys reccomend me some of his more accessible albums?

I think The Human Equation was abit uneven, it had great moments and then some pretty boring moments. I'd have to say that the most accessible (and also the least ambitious) album would have to be Actual Fantasy. A good idea is to look at the list of guest singers on each album.

My favorites are the Universal Migrator albums, both of those are stunning pieces of work.

Sick. Those albums are both horrible, especially the first one. Mindless boring crap is what it was. I remember the first time I played them; I was pleased w/ an 1/8 of the first disk, and a 1/4 of the second. Then again, that was years ago. My taste in music has change significantly since then. I might give them another shot.

Bizzare, I like both those Ayeron albums. Never heard the Star One shit, I have to be in the mood for that stuff. If you like Floyd, latter day Anathema and stuff like that you should dig those albums.
