I have enjoyed Sons of Northern Darkness for about two years now, but around here that is the only Immortal album you can find. Well now it seems that Battles in the North, and Diabolic Fullmoon Mysticism have been reissued. Is it safe to say I can buy these without hesitation if I like Northern Darkness?

I've never gotten into Darkthrone too much either, but tonight I noticed Plaguewielder and Goatlord (and I think Panzerfaust) had mysteriously appeared. Any nay or yay on these?

Thanks

Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism is the only Immortal album i have and like. Excellent thrashing black metal ala Bathory.

There's a big difference in the sound inbetween those albums. I'd say that if you enjoyed SoND, you'll fucking love "At the Heart of Winter". Try to get that instead.

I thought Northern Darkness had perfect production, so I was kind of apprehensive about Immortal's older albums. Sometimes the bleak low budget sound is cool, but not something I would want to listen to very often, hence I never got into bands like Darkthrone, but on the other hand I don't know what their later albums are like. Just thought I would ask about it since I saw them in the store, plus Goatloard has a sweet cover.

I don't think Goatlord and Plaguewielder are albums you have to get, if you're interested in DT you should know that there are more important albums. (abitns, Th)

and I was never a big fan of earlier Immortal, At the Heart of Winter is the only album that I like, and even that was a 8/10 at best.

The production of Immortal albums has a strange lineage, but the drums are always there and clear. They always have a dominating double kick sound that drives their music. And I love the way the riffage sounds on "Battles in the North", which is their best. It sounds much more natural and less computerized that "Sons", and "Winter."

Absolutely get your hands on Battles in the North and Pure Holocaust. Then transition to "Fullmoon", and Damned in Black. You might have some trouble getting into "Blizzard Beasts", which has by far the worst production of all their albums, even their first. You can barely hear Abbath on BB.
