I trust you're intimately familiar with all the works of the great composers of the various classical eras? I mean, why else would you say that, right?

Well then, as you must well know, most of said notable composers' works are composed of a fair amount of throwaway material. These guys were amazingly prolific, but how much of their work is really notable for every single note? Hell, people didn't even start getting passionate about music until Beethoven's later years. Before the Romantic era even the great works were largely boring. Dainty, completely undaring, neatly structured. They were pleasant instead of beautiful. Those guys are overrated to an incredible extent. Some people suck way too much classical cock just because of the age of the works, but they never question the material in the same way they would a modern song or album. The same thing happens with anything old, whether it was written 500 years ago, or 20. As far as I'm concerned, there are many modern composers that at least equal a lot of the old masters. Some may deal in different instruments, but they make astounding music all the same.

Not to mention that you really did not make any sense until the last sentence...

Your point Being...?

Of all the people on the internet who could accuse someone of not making sense, you are the last in line.

There is an end to the english language. Resting somewhere far past that end are the words to describe your inability to be amusing or witty in any given situation.

Ihsahn>>>>>Mozart

What doesn't make him(or Roman from Drudkh, for example) worthy of being compared to composers? Has he ever wrote a song with the same structure? I don't think so. That should count for something.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and make some personal comments here.

Metal makes up a portion of the music I enjoy, and I used to say it was just a phase, something I'll grow up and out of. I guess back then I wasn't so proud of it, and was trying to reassure those around me that I'm not really serious about it. I wasn't proud of it.

Now, three years later, I find that my music collection is mostly metal. Well, its become nigh time to embrace it and accept it as a form of music I love, and be proud of it. I won't live in denial, or live ashamed of what I do. Now, I'd say that I am proud of the music I listen to.

But now it all came together for me. I realize the reason I used to deny my metal leanings. People who are brash and shocking with their posts are those that I do not want to be associated with in the 'metal-head' category. Others, peppered with piercings and covered in tatooes, walking around with a chip on their shoulder, freaky beards down to their bellybuttons are something that I'm certainly not. These people seem to use metal as an excuse to be aggresive and unapproachable, which is fine, I guess, but not healthy. Not a way of life I'd really recommend to anybody who I care about, you know, unless they're trustworthy and know what they're doing.

I am respectful, intelligent, and creative, and enjoy intense music, especially in the vein of Ihsahn and other epic metal artists. I have long hair. I play guitar and drums and piano, get the drift? I am not an insensitive crazy who posts about cock-sucking and silly crap like that. I don't punch people in mosh pits or kill babies in my spare time. In fact I'm in med school.

I'm sorry to be on my soapbox going on a rant here out on my limb, but I have these feelings that I wanted to get across to somebody. Not to lash out against anybody in particular, but I just wanted to say that these forums SHOULD have deeper, more engaging discussions, not cock-suck this or that, or this guy's an idiot or not. Metal heads can be deep and intelligent people, just like other people, only difference being they listen to louder music.

Let's say more on these forums, not less.

If the Mozart comment above was directed at what I said earlier, you misunderstand. I can't stand Mozart and was just glad I didn't feel a need to defend Ihsahn against him. Like Radical Cut, I think Beethoven is pretty deserving of the praise he gets, but I think Mozart isn't.

I assumed you were anti-Mozart. Glad I'm not the only one. Beethoven deserves the hype.

Well, well, well. Obviously you haven't been reading much of the posts made around here because then you'd know that the cock-sucking joke was a rare example of its kind. Guess what? I don't kill babies or punch people in mosh pits, or even have long hair! Yet still like metal, just like yourself. If you want to change the direction of the forum, why not take a larger part, instead of standing on the sidelines and sniping when you think something's wrong?

And unfair, hah. Beethoven is one of the few composers whose endless praise I would say is fairly justified.

Either way I was just wrong about your objection. I had you figured as a "no modern composers will ever measure up to the greats" kind of guy, instead of just an "I don't like Ihsahn" kind of guy.

Exactly..

I think I'm more of a "good ol' Ihsahn is cool and everything. Some of his stuff is good, but he is overrated. That is not the case with Beethoven however" kind of guy... :D

@ PeteChips: What are you on about? A lot of the discussions around here are kept on a relatively 'decent' level...

You know, Eisenfaust, I may have said too much. I just felt like getting some of that off my chest, and maybe inciting a little more discussion.

Its also possible that I;'m too demanding. I simply want to read well thought-out and developed ideas, rather than endless exchanges about people's opinions of this or that with explitives in there. If you have opinion, I maintain, I don't want to hear only it, but also an EXPLANATION. I don't see that often , and would like to see it more often. But yes, it takes a long time and some serious effort to write good quality ideas out.

Too often, people talk about this sucks or that rules. Why? is my perennial question. I want interesing stuff to read, not just a bunch of anonymous posters saying what they like of hate!

That's all. Can you blame me?

It's actually good that we can welcome people of your kind on this board, because I know this is one of the few metalboards where interesting discussions take place AND where people are relatively open-minded. I know too that you're not going to fill this board with bullshit. As for your rant, you'll find that most people here are not the typical metal stereotype. I myself in example, don't even listen to metal
