Soilwork, Detonation, Darkane and Within Y all have the screechier sort of growls that In Flames has. Scar Symmetry uses both harsh and clean vocals, so you might try them.

EDIT: You might also try Arch Enemy (ignore the thread asking why AE has shitty vocalists, neither Liiva nor Gossow are shitty).

Also, these are all bands that play in the same genre as In Flames (melodeath). If you're looking for other genres, check out stuff like Vintersorg, Ensiferum, Wintersun, Thyrfing, Falkenbach and Moonsorrow (folk/Viking metal tends to have less harsh vocals than death metal but still be fairly energetic).

I'm sure I'll think of ten other bands to recommend in the next half-hour.

Add Diablo's 2 albums to that list, i am sure she/he'll like it...

Grow yourself some balls and start with the classics of the genre, then if you still think N*FlAyMeZ is worth listening to, you can just give up on the genre completely.

I din't excpect such a response!!!! First of all I'm a guy and I'm not gay! Thanx to everyone who tried to help! I think some of you misunderstood me...I've been listening to metal for 8 years now! I am not so new to metal but to death metal or whatever IN FLAMES is! I can understand that to most of you they are crap but try and understand that I love metal and that one of the reasons for that is not so much for it's agression and loudness but for the uniqueness of the bands, for their musical geniusity and the energy larger than life. I've been listening to IRON MAIDEN, EDGUY, GAMMARAY, HELLOWEEN, MANOWAR, ICED EARTH, PYRAMAZE and many other bands and every time I discover a new band it's like something amazing happens, I know you all know what I mean! When I first heard Iron Maiden - the first metal band I ever heard - it was incredible...never heard anything like that on TV or radio...something totaly different than anything served to the mass public. They got me into metal!!! With every band it was very similar but then after so many years when I heard IN FLAMES i got the same feeling I got with maiden. What Iron Maiden is to POP, In Flames are to Maiden.... in a way indeed!!! So..... I wrote all this shit down in order to clarify that I have never heard anything but IN FLAMES from this genre - DEATH METAL that I always thought was non-melodic, idiotic, etc. I only listened a litle bit to DARK TRANQUILITY - CHARACTER and maybe didn't give it a chance but it was more heavier than I am prepared for now. But now I'm listening to DARK TRANQUILITY - PROJECTOR (Zad's recomendation) and seems to be more of what I'd like.

Another thing...someone said I'm gay, I don't know why but it may be for the way I write...English is my second language so if i spell incorectley or if it seems gay...I'm not.

One last thing. You all wrote so many bands but could you just shorten the list of bands now knowing a little more what I'd like. And what I'd like is probably what I like with IN FLAMES - fantastic guitar melodies, amazinig riffs and great choruses( that actualy have a more solid vocal melody and not just shouting and screaming off-key)!

What by In Flames have you heard? "The Jester Race" is wildly different from "Soundtrack To Your Escape" or "Come Clarity," for example. TJR is a great example of melodic death metal, STYE just sucks. In any case, check out all the bands I mentioned in my first post, and you'll probably find something you like.

Lastly, most off-key screaming and shouting appears in metalcore, not death metal.

The first one I heard was REROUTE TO REMAIN. Than CLAYMAN and COME CLARITY.

You know what...at first when I listened to them it was all a bit messy and to much shouting, but it was the great choruses that hooked me...than by time you get used to the more distorted guitars and the "worse" production(compared to power metal) and get to like it. I know that death metal is a drug and I'll probably be wanting to get more and more into heavier bands, harsher vocals ect. but for now I'll take it slowly - I'd just like the most melodic of the genre!

Go get "Lunar Strain," "The Jester Race" and "Whoracle." Seriously, the albums you've mentioned are fairly sub-par examples of In Flames, although they do have their moments. Avoid "Soundtrack To Your Escape" at all costs. If someone tries to give it to you, punch them in the face. They are not your friend. Disclaimer: Carnifex Umbris does not advocate literally punching someone in the face, even if they deserve it.

If it's the melody of the choruses that really appeals to you, try checking out "Expanding Senses" by Darkane, and "Follow The Reaper" and "Hatebreeder" by Children of Bodom.

If you like Power Metal, try Follow the Reaper and Hatebreeder by Children of Bodom - not MeloDeath, but a good bridge between the two genres. Its basically aggressive/melodic Power Metal with harsh vocals.

Oh, and you should like Dark Tranquility's Gallery and Mind's I albums as well. Their albums are quite varied, Character's more basic and heavier, while the earlier stuff's more in line with what you're looking for. Try Children Of Bodom as well, like Radagast said.

Kalmah, that's a perfect stepping stone to the heavier forms of metal music when you're coming from power. Even better than Children Of Bodom.

I guess there's also Skyfire and Norther in that bracket (I'd recommend Norther in particular for beginners - like a more streamlined, less chaotic version of Bodom).

By the way, Mish, I'd prefer "coming across from power" rather than "coming up from power."
