 Post subject: Surprise Music Listen
PostPosted: Thu Mar 02, 2006 9:49 pm
Well, one of my coworkers surprised me by letting me borrow Blackwater Park. Up until now, the only Opeth I seriously listened to was Damnation (really good album, btw). But I listened to BWP and all I can say is, "Awesome!" I'll definitely be sure to burn this CD later today.

Get a hold of "Still Life" too if you can, great album.

Once you have a firm grip on BWP, I highly suggest My Arms, Your Hearse.

Despite what others will undoubtedly say, Opeth is a great band.

When did Opeth turn into a band that people bashed? A few years back that were talked about like they were gods! Was it the switch to Roadruinner?

all Opeth is great, but for me, Still life, My arms, your hearse, Morningrise and Blackwater Park have a fixed place in all metal discography.

w00t! Another Opeth thread. Let me begin, I'm sure others will catch up :

Opeth blows. It's just random wankery by carefully selected riffs that have been known to appeal to people *cough*floyd*cough*and as random as it is it's still very formulaic : riff-chug-growl-acustics-clean vocals.

When did "formulaic" start having anything to do with good music?

I quite like Opeth's acoustic album actually..

not many people really hate Opeth, they just hate seeing them held up as jesus when they're more like, you know.. I dunno, did Moses have a brother? yeah

Opeth are cool, people just don't like them because they don't downtune their guitars as much as other death metal bands do

and we all know that a heavy riff through a whole song is way less formulaic than a song that changes from heavy to soft. Seriously ppl, use your brains

Moses' brother was called Aaron. No, you shouldn't have posted it...

Ah yes, Dirge for November, the greatest song in the history of the world.

Some of the other tracks are good though.

Well, just burned this right now and am also downloading the Final Fantasy 9 OST (probably my favorite soundtrack of all the PS1 FF's, except may be Tactics). Killing two birds with one stone!

Of course Suffocation are quite a bit more formulaic than Opeth; however, d'you see people calling Suffocation 'the most innovative metal band ever?'

Besides, Opeth is stale and boring. There's nothing on Ghost Reveries that wasn't already on Blackwater Park and Still Life. It's like listening to a bad Opeth cover band that decided to write a record.

I think it was when BWP started getting them recognized and hyped by the metal community in a big way, when the first real backlash started. It just increases with time.

And yeah, like lizardtail said. Seeing a mediocre band held up to be infallible Gods all the time tends to bug some people, so they resent said mediocre band. Just like someone who gives Opeth albums 100/100 and says every album is the best ever, and that they're the best band ever, people who think they aren't can go to extremes to make a point.

Think about it, everyone has gotten annoyed by someone vastly overrating a band at some point. You can say you haven't but you'd just be a filthy liar.

I think that playing death metal that is accepted widely in prog rock, or even rock, communities is pretty innovative

Okay, fine, Entombed. The point is, Opeth is insanely overhyped and have been for six years and it just bugs the fucking shit out of me. If not as many people talked about them like they were the sweat off god's armpits, then I wouldn't have to spend so much energy thinking up elaborate metaphorical constructs to demonstrate my hatred with.

Course I do. I love bashing bad bands. Opeth just presents itself more often nowadays.
