Right now I'm listening to Dragonslayer, Dream Evil's first album... and really, really digging it. This causes the same number of 'really'-s for confusion, since I used to hate most power metal. I dunno, maybe Dragonforce and these guys combined are making me come around.

The point is, I'm looking for recommendations for someone new to the genre. I already hate Rhapsody, so no bands along those lines, please.

And I must say, crow pie is delicious.

More aggressive stuff

Angel Dust - (Anything)
Firewind - Burning Earth (Decent album with the same guitarist from Dream Evil)
Blind Guardian (Anything)
Cellador (fast like Dragonforce melodic like Helloween) www.myspace/cellador.com
Helloween - Walls of Jericho
Metalium - Millennium Metal Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 (don't get anything else)

Edit Regarding Firewind - This is actually Gus G's (guitarist)main band. He is no longer in Dream Evil, as you have probably gathered form the recent discussions.

I can almost guarantee he won't like Kamelot. Give them a shot anyway DM, they're one of the best in the genre.

Definitely give Kamelot's Epica a shot, though as Ness said, you may not like it. I second the Blind Guardian reccomendation; they're my favourite power metal band and have yet to release anything close to bad (except for maybe the Maiden and the Ministrel Knight... Don't listen to that song.. And due to your tastes, you may not enjoy the entire A Night at the Opera album). For something more aggressive, Manticora is completely up there (check out their Hyperion album) and Helstar's Nosferatu is also worth checking out. Finally, though they're not as aggressive as the previous two, Lost Horizon's A Flame to the Ground Beneath is an incredible power metal album. Those be my reccomendations.

I wouldn't consider Cellador, Firewind or Metallium aggressive.

Aggressive in Speed and vocals. Actually I just threw out some suggestions that DM might like. I'm always going to give Cellador a plug. Don't doubt me!!

Quick reactions:

AngelDust- Holy shit, this is really damned good. No flowery yawp, just metal. Very cool, I like a lot.
Firewind- I like that Dream Evil album more, but this isn't bad. This is a sample from Forged by Fire, however.
Cellador- Link doesn't work.
Helloween- Meh.
Metalium- MEH.
Blind Guardian - Pretty cool, from those samples.
Kamelot- Not bad, surprisingly.

That's all I had time to check out. I'll be grabbing full albums over the weekend.

Try Rebellion: http://www.metalreviews.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5246

Cellador is definitely a damn good band, not aggressive, but fast and not definitely not cheesy. Did you listen to Core Device when I reviewed them?

Lost Horizon might be a bit too fruity for him.

Lost Horizon are a little over-the-top, especially in the vocals, but it's damn fun music. You can't not appreciate the line "Don't forget you are metal, not some ass-kissing whore!"

Hey, I love the band, but they are over-the-top, let the quicksand do it's thing to Aaron, let's not pull him under too quick. Hahaha.

Lost Horizon need to cut the shit with the member names.
