This is not a joke, by the way. The results should certainly be interesting.

As BLABBERMOUTH.NET first hinted on Jan. 6 and then again on Jan. 27, METALLICA have finally confirmed that they are working with producer Rick Rubin (SYSTEM OF A DOWN, AUDIOSLAVE, SLAYER, SLIPKNOT) on their new studio album.

In a posting on their official web site, METALLICA write, "We just wanted to let our friends know that we have been jamming, writing, just plain messing around and having fun in the studio for the last few weeks.

"Oh, and by the way, this up-and-coming producer guy named Rick something-or-other has been coming by the studio every now and again to listen to some of our new stuff and throw his two/three cents in.

"Since this Rick dude is new to all of this, we thought it would be a nice gesture to help break him into the music business by asking him to produce our next record. We're very happy he said yes! In other words, we are psyched to share with you that Rick Rubin is producing the next METALLICA album! FUCK YEAH!"

It was as far back as last October that the first rumblings of a METALLICA/Rubin collaboration reached BLABBERMOUTH.NET, and the rumors have been gaining strength ever since. Adding fuel to these reports was the fact that longtime METALLICA producer Bob Rock is scheduled to spend a good portion of 2006 working on the new CD from MÖTLEY CRÜE, which is expected to surface sometime next year.

In a September 2005 interview with the METALLICA fan club magazine So What!, METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich was asked point-blank if Bob Rock's name had been discused for the group's next album.

"I would say that Bob Rock will always be our producer," Ulrich replied. "You know it's almost like default. It's not whether he should produce, it's more whether he shouldn't produce it. So I would expect Bob Rock to produce it unless he's not interested."

In the same interview, Ulrich spoke highly of the most recent albums by SLIPKNOT and SYSTEM OF A DOWN — both of which were produced by Rubin — citing them as particularly inspiring in terms of making him "look forward to paying a little more attention to the sonics" next time around.

METALLICA officially began the songwriting process for their new album late last year and are expected to spend the next few months compiling ideas before entering the final recording stage. A late 2006/early 2007 release via Warner Bros. is expected.

I still hold my opinion that Rick Rubin is not a good metal producer. And that no producer is likely to coax a good album out of this long dead band.

Eyesore is either going to ignore this statement entirely or respond with some variation of 'You're out of your tits!!! something something something."

In any event, it's still going to be crap. Don't care who produces it.

Maybe he just works with crap material.. South of Heaven was a good production job.

I think it's the opposite. People go apeshit over him because he worked with Slayer but Slayer largely sounded like shit production-wise, especially the guitars. Same with SOAD, and that new Slipknot. The guitar sounds awful, the drums just sound dead, everything is muddy and weak.

But I guess some people love that dry lifeless sound.

Makes sense, Lars was talking props about alot of the bands Rubin has done. Heehee, I agree, though. It will be 'interesting.' It may fit their desired sound, because the guitars will sound like special effects, and not music.

Why would I do that? Because he produced SOAD? He's a good producer, but he's got his arms in so many genres I hardly have an opinion.

Now, if they'd gone with Waldemar Sorchyta I would have shat myself. Either way, it's going to be very hard to come up with something worse than St. Anger. The good sign is that the band clearly know St. Anger sucked. They still defend it, but their actions and things they've individually said since it's release tell a different story.

Hmph, well its a step up from Rock. But they could have dragged Martin Birch out of retirement and the new album would still be shee-ite. So nyeh.

I don't understand how you guys can tell an album is going to be shit when no one has heard a single note of it... is it presumptuous or just stupid... I'd go with option 2

as for Rick Rubin, I think it's a good news... what he did with RHCP, Beastie Boys, Slayer & Johnny Cash makes me think he can fit Metallica alright... will it make a good album ? after St Anger anyone can doubt, so do I...

i must admit that i think Metallica has a good sense of humour... St. Anger was a good joke, but come on! it's not funny anymore, stop fooling around and make some serious music for once :x !!!

Slayer kicked ass with Rubin, but i admit it sounded weak. when Slayer slowed down it sucked because it just wouldn't sound heavy enough to be fun.

but still, he can do a better job than our friend bob rock...

i say metallica get andy sneap. eh.
