There's a certain amount of self-indulgent wanking involved in most music with the word "progressive" attached to it, but there can still be good songs underneath that. DT used to be able to write good songs even if the insane technicality could usually stand to be taken down a notch or two. ToT signaled the end of real songwriting, and they also seemed to place vocals as an afterthought in the mix - as if they basically became LTE with vocals just because DT's supposed to have vocals.

They now make Fates Warning's later-day, written-through-the-mail, assembly line wanking sound like AC/DC.

I would call it a Hit. While I like DT, they are not my favorite prog band and progressive metal is my fave genre. I think ToT was a necessary album for them. they needed to get a little bit harder and they did. They are most definitley a metal band. I think it stands alone as a very good album and it leads perfectly into Octavarium, which was a very mature album for them. The only problem with DT is that as a band they get too much attention as the kings of the prog metal genre, wheile bands like Pain of Salvation are doing much more progressive things. That is, when it comes to technicality and musicality.
