Yes, I agree that Michael Schenker Group was the official name (and McCauley-Schenker group was the official name too), but M.S.G. was a common acronym for both bands, as the logo of the band says. So it's usual to call the band the both ways, as acronym or with full name...
For the other side, whitesnake & Riot are excellent recomendations, I agree with them.
In a different style, give a try to Thin Lizzy & early Rush (specially 2112), and Gary Moore pre-blues period.
