A night at the opera is the only way to start with Queen. |

1rst album, then progress into their discography. |

I'd say Sheer Heart Attack may be a good place to start, since it was more-or-less their breakthrough album. If nothing else, it contained their first real hit (Killer Queen). |

Their debut has Keep Yourself Alive & Liar. Those are not hits per se but pretty much the foundation of the band Queen was to become. |

Any album from the 70s will do. Sheer Heart Attack is their most metallic effort, Queen II their most prog, Queen I is a good balance between heavy/prog/glam, A night at the Opera and A Day at the Races are the most sophisticated, and News of the World and Jazz are their most straightforward 70s hard rock albums. |

Best advice possible given the question ANATO is no doubt THE Queen classic album and perhaps it shows the best balance between the many different styles Queen's music is made of, but somehow i feel it's not the best place to start for a metal fan; there are Queen albums that rock harder than this one: for instance Sheer Heart Attack(74), News of the World(77), Jazz(78), Queen I(73) or even Queen's final album Innuendo(91). Also, you should try the DVD Queen Rock Montreal(a 1981 live) if you want to see how good a hard rocking band Queen were. |

- A Night at the Opera - News of the World Two great albums that display variety and timeless songwriting. |

And don't forget The Game, which was probably the most musically diverse album in their entire discography (even though it did hint at the questionable direction they would take with Hot Space). |

I agree, I think "A Night at the Opera" will solidify your patronage to Queen. When you're ready to move to their more metal music, go to "Sheer Heart Attack". |

You know, this is probably the only time I would ever advise this, but QUeen's Greatest Hits is a great introduction to their music. It was my first introduction and from there I got all of their albums, starting with a Night at the Opera. So, I would get the greatest hits and see which era you like best, then buy the albums accordingly. Again, not what I would typically advise, however, given the vintage and breadth of the Queen catalog, this is the best way to find out for yourself. |

Don't lose your head is a great song from the movie. I bought the album and it was like the old whitesnake switcharoo all over again. Nice guitar playing and really good arrangement of elements, but the singing was out of place as usual. I don't think Mercury was particularly careful about having a good vocal frequency response. He was really shrill in my book in the way Geddy is not. Geddy's voice is smooth, but high. Not enough of a pure opera singer which would have a full and powerfully biased voice until it eases into their range. He sounds boxy and thin with no sharp high notes to explain weighting the voice in that region. Brad Delp was the real Virtuoso. |
