Post subject:  Your Favorite Songwriters
My wife and I were watching the latest Rock n Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies last week. We got into a pretty good conversation about songwriters after John Mellencamp was inducted. I've always cited Mellencamp as one of my favorite songwriters. He just has a great ability to tell stories through his music. I feel the same way about John Reznik of the Goo Goo Dolls. My wife immediately cited Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, and Bruce Springsteen as three of her favorites. For the sake of argument we were concentrating more on rock songwriters.

So, I thought this would make an interesting thread around here. Who are some of your favorite songwriters?

i don't really listen to any of the "classic" songwriter type people, so I can't really comment on that =\

my favourites are the Wright brothers from Nomeansno (i love how much of their personality and views on the world is evident through their lyrics and songwriting) and Cedric/Omar from The Mars Volta (omar writes all the music but i think cedric's voice + lyrics are just as important)

Maynard James Keenan - his voice adds a lot to it as well, but even just his lyrics themselves are very intelligent and poetic.

Lyrically Tom Araya. Everyone writes Slayer off instantly but some of his lyrics are supreme-Behind Crooked Cross is teh pwn.

I never knew a band member had to write a certain proportion of lyrics to be considered lyricists. I'm sorry, I'm obviously in the wrong.

am shocekd noone has mentioned the band Shadow Gallery, their lyrics are insightful and when you listen the lyrics on their Tyranny CD it just is sort of a scary thing to think some of it is happening now a days..

Not really rock at all, but Damien Rice is incredible, especially in the lyrics department. Joshua Radin, while a lot more accessible, is also very good.

i am assuming you mean pop/rock or singer- songwriter style??
If so, Donnie Vie -(by a large mile), then miles away in 2nd John Lennon, then miles further away... who knows??
Those two write great melodies without even thinking about it. they breath it..heck they prolly wrote great tunes on toilet paper and then flushed them away.. all in a span of 5 minutes :)
