Any Smashing Pumpkins fans on these boards ?
I recently got their newest release and despite th mixed reviews it got, it has been a pleasant surprise. Their previous release Machina was fairly good but this one is definitely their best work since Mellon Collie. Most of the songs are in hard-Rock border Metal territory with some really cool guitar work and solos. Obviously th Smashing Pumpkins feel is all over it, with a touch of Zwan.

If you've heard it and/or own it, what are your thoughts ?

They really are a great band and I have been growing up with them in my CD player and they hold a special place in my memories and heart.
Even with the years their songs hold up to time, and that is a testament to their greatness. True, their newer material will never match what they have done with Siamese Dreams and Mellon Collie and The Infinite sadness, but it beats anything that hits the charts nowadays by infinite.

I'm a fan, but I have not heard the new one yet. I've heard one song of it, and I thought it was awesome.

I just listened to some samples on Amazon.com. Overall, I like it. Reminds me of My Brother The Cow era Mudhoney. May be I'll pick up Mellon Collie sometime soon.

One of the bands I always thought I would like, but never did. I liked their song, The Everlasting Gaze, but never really pursued them after that.

Like K, this is another always-meant-to band for me. Dreadful reviews, I noticed for this though. Will listen to more...

Yeah I read the reviews and most of them aren't eloquent, but they mostly talk about the band rejoining with two original members only and barely talk about the music itself. Who cares about Darcy Wretzky and James Iha, Everything has always been done by Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlain since Siamese Dream, they are The pumpkins!
Zeitgeist is a great album no matter what the reviews say. The reviewers are being critical of it just for the sake of being critical.
The best example would be that these same critics reviewed Linkin Park's newer release better... and trust me it doesn't even come close to Zeitgeist. At least not all critics are unfair: http://jam.canoe.ca/Music/Artists/S/Smashing_Pumpkins/AlbumReviews/2007/07/06/4319019.html
The problem with the reviews arise when they compare it to their previous masterpieces such as siamese dreams and mellon collie when they should simply review it for what it is a good album nothing less, nothing more.

I've only ever heard their more mellow songs, so I should check out their heavier stuff.

Some of those ring a vague bell, I'll give them a download.

It was funny. Whether or not it's humour is a different thing.

good band, but long over their top. Zeitgeist was not bad indeed, i quite enjoyed it. Still no match for Mellon Collie... or Siamese Dream
