The band, as we all know which Dimebag Darrel was playing in when he was killed. I was wondering what everyone thought of the debut 'New Found Power', and whether you think they would have kept making good records if tragedy hadn't befell this band. I personally love 'New Found Power' but some people say this band is ''nu-metal'', but it's more of a modern hard rock approach in my opnion.

Pantera were already kinda crappy but Damageplan succeeded in giving the audience even crappier music... nothing any good would have come from them then...

so okay, it's a tragedy Dimebag got murdered but I won't miss him as a musician

They would have had to be making good music in the first place for that to happen, and anyone with ears could tell you that wasn't the case.

Even worse than Panterrible.

What's with all the Pantera hate?

But yeah, Damageplan was no good.

Exactly! Very strange. Must be metalcoremo fans!

I actually hated the Damageplan CD when I first heard it, then listened again like a year later and enjoyed it. It's not amazing, but decent. The problem is simple, the singer sucked. Flat out. He had a terrible voice and his melodies were shit. Take that music, put a killer vocalist on the songs and you'd have an awesome CD!

It's laughable to see how Pantera tries so hard to hide the fact that they were glam.

From glam to groove metal, all jumping bandwagons. Pantera has zero integrity in my eyes, Damageplan certainly didnt help.

nonetheless Dimebag is definately a good guitarist .. and so as Piggy

Don't be a tool. That's an ignorant statement. That is what's laughable. Pantera NEVER tried to hide that they were glam. First off, they were KIDS when Pantera started. When I was a teenager I was in a shitty rock band called X-WOLF (don't ask)!! Still, I emulated my favorite bands and what was "cool." Shit, my guitar playing style is identical to that of Steve Clark from Def Leppard!

Yes, early in the bands career they were heavy, glam-like rock, but if you've EVER heard their first four albums you would hear a band CLEARLY progressing and evolving into the band they eventually became on Cowboys From Hell and beyond.

You started hearing Dimebag's signature solo and riff work, the double-bass started to show up on Projects In The Jungle! Name another 80's rock band that had double bass in their songs? There aren't many! By the time I Am The Night came out you could hear that Cowboys From Hell style creeping into a lot of the songs, then on Power Metal it was all there. Cowboys From Hell took it one step further, but you can't deny the 80's influence on parts of that album. Then they shed 95% of that 80's rock influence on Vulgar Display Of Power and continued to get heavier from there on.

Comments that they jumped on bandwagons, hid their past, etc. is a bunch of bullshit. It's ignorant to even suggest it.

From a few interviews i read in the past, they did deny the fact they were glam. They also claimed that their debut album is Cowboys From Hell, not Metal Magic.....

Anyway since i obviously dont care much about Pantera now and then, take the rest of my opinions with a pinch of salt :o

Well, the argument that they weren't glam is understandable. They had the 80's look, but they didn't wear make-up. They had the hair and the spandex, though, just like SLAYER did. Maybe they thought they were just 80's rock/metal. I can see that.

Most bands refer to their major label debut as their "debut." It's annoying, but it's not necessarily a denial of their previous releases. Maybe Pantera feels that Cowboys From Hell represented the band better than the previous albums? Maybe they said that because those albums were extremely hard to find? Who knows? I've never seen them ignore those albums, though. In fact, Vinnie discussed very recently about re-releasing those albums!

I would love them on CD, they kick ass!

I think if they werent ashamed of their pre Cowboys days (which they seem to give me that impression), they could have easily rereleased the glam albums in the past. After all they had major label support, what's stopping them ? It sounds to me like they are trying to bury that past behind, and i'd put some money on that.

Probably, since today Pantera's gone, Dimebag's gone, Vinnie can push for a reissue. $$$ intentions or not behind it, it's good for the fans.

Just my thoughts.

What sense would it make to re-issue them today as opposed to years ago? We're talking 80's rock either way, it isn't popular now, it wasn't popular then. Re-releasing those albums would not be for money—which Vinnie does not need anyway—it would be for fans like me, who would buy them in a second. They still wouldn't sell well.

When Pantera became popular with Vulgar Display of Power they were a completely different band. On the surface anyway, which is what 95% of music fans see/hear. They would hear those early albums and probably react the same way you did. They wouldn't dig a little deeper and actually hear the Vulgar Display Of Power sound on the I Am The Night album, they wouldn't. Thus it wouldn't make sense to re-release those albums at the height of their popularity because it would simply cause confusion and possibly a backlash on the band.

Have you actually ever heard the albums? Go download "Down Below" from I Am The Night (it's also on Power Metal) and download "Over And Out" from Power Metal and tell me those songs don't fucking shred!

Pssst! Skid Row isn't glam either! :D

Power Metal is a killer album. The riffing on "Over And Out" is some of the best shit Dimebag ever did. Even the Metal Magic album, while extremely cheesy 80's rock, had some damn good songs on it. Personally, I can't wait for them to be released on CD. I have the 12" LPs and have no record player! :D

Its not just that Pantera didn't re-release their early albums, but they allowed them to go out of print.

And, while I've never had the 'pleasure' of seeing a Pantera performance, I'd be willing to bet that from Cowboys on, they didn't play any of the stuff from their first four albums.

For me its always been there. I've always thought they were terrible.
