Process Of Guilt is a Portuguese Doom/Ambient Metal band, that are close to Agalloch, Swallow the Sun, early Paradise Lost or heaven My Dying Bride in some passages, but are much more deeper, and heavy, with little help of sampling.
It's a band I would recommend you all, they have just put their new album on sale, named "Renounce". and it's one of Doom metal albums of the year, they are from my country and honestly, I'm not tending to them by favour ;)

Process of Guilt is here with the debut album. Already you've been able to read my opinions of their music for the amount of two demo-album reviews. Now, it's the real deal. The music style has moved even more to the side of doom. Some doom purists might want to disagree. For those, I'd like to say: every time I write doom, read down-tempo. All right... more about the album called Renounce then. The vocals are handled in the manner of roaring as it comes with the territory. The roars are more from the deep end of the category. Thus no shrieking enhanced roars won't be heard. Clean vocals anyhow will be heard. This is in smaller amount but there anyhow. No matter, both of the styles fit in like a quick fist in both of your eyes in a wiener kiosk line. (ask your Finnish friends to explain this tradition...) Musically the delivery is dark and somewhat depressing though well played and collected. The guitars bring a highly distorted vision of existence into your ears through most of the process. The tranquil parts offer some more melodic approaching. Drumming is most of the time keeping up slow or medium slow pace. Even so, you'll here a few double bass bashings. For a fan of well placed d.b., this is most rewarding. As what comes to the atmosphere, it is built like a pro carpenter would. Imperceptible but vital and obviously there. Some moments remind me of Swallow the Sun quite much. Especially there's one part in Becoming Light (that you can hear for free on PoG myspace page). Anyhow, it is only a question of transient moment. The general style of music remains somewhat similar to StS all along. The album includes merely seven musical pieces but it lasts for about 70 minutes. The people quick as lightning in math can count that we're talking about 10 minutes a pop. Yes, ten minutes a song. Some might fear that this means, the music cannot carry its weight. Well, wrong thought. Every piece, even though at the first listen a couple might sound a bit confusing and stretched (to the ones not used to the style at least), can carry its own structure to the finish line. At this point, I'd say that Process of Guilt has hatched out of its shell and watches the musical world with the full possibility to grow up and prosper to be the number one of Portugal and further. You remember the race between the turtle and the rabbit. Process of Guilt is another turtle that wins the race.

Besides being the satisfying culmination of a couple of promising demos, _Renounce_ is (considering what I have heard this year so far) the best doom/death metal album to have been released in 2006. That a debuting Portuguese band would achieve this in a year where My Dying Bride released a new album makes it all the more remarkable, but in truth it was actually Finland's My Shameful who came up with the most serious candidate this year in that specific subgenre. As far as doom metal in general, I find myself unable to choose between _Renounce_ and _Dismantling Devotion_ by Daylight Dies, which I cannot really place in the same category of doom metal anyway as the latter is much more melodic.
Contrary to albums that tread grey areas between doom metal subgenres, _Renounce_ is a doom/death album through and through. More importantly, Process of Guilt create thoroughly enjoyable material that is a fine example of the genre. It may not be the most innovative, but neither is it necessarily derivative; the style sounds familiar, but the music bears their own personal touch and remains vivid and relevant. Boosted by an impeccable production job, this results in an album that shows a great deal of confidence and belies the lack of any previous albums. Opener "Motionless" simply explodes upon the listener, with a mix of solemn passages, guitar laments, hard hitting riffs and massive roars. "Becoming Light" immediately follows suit, starting off with some especially effective guitar work, drum fills and anguished death vox: doom/death damn near its best.
While I like all of the seven tracks however, the second half generally tends to lack some of the album's initial impact. Nevertheless, where normally one would be looking mostly at the potential hinted at in this debut album, _Renounce_ already fulfills most of that potential, therefore becoming a truly remarkable first disc. Hopefully there is yet more to come.

Process Of Guilt "Renounce" CD
“Renounce” is the awesome debut full-length from Portugal’s Process of Guilt, making for quite an impressive first release from the new Portuguese label Major Label industries. With seven tracks clocking in at over an hour’s time (the shortest track is just shy of eight minutes) this fucker’s chock full of absolutely supreme melodic, atmospheric doom/death. I honestly haven’t encountered an album of such impressive overall quality from this niche of the metal world in quite some time, so I’m really blown away by this material. I wouldn’t say they’re striving for utmost originality or anything as all of the staples are in place - from the crushing rhythms and forceful vocal dynamics of My Dying Bride to the droning lead melodies of Paradise Lost or early Katatonia, accented by sparse clean passages or energetic melodic sensibilities reminiscent of prime Anathema - but when the songwriting and emotional tone of an album reach this level of excellence, originality is of zero concern to me. And there are some interesting twists and turns herein that are somewhat atypical. For example, on occasion they’ll break into an aggressive dirge that sounds like classic Bolt Thrower, and that really adds a different dimension to the writing that’s a bit unexpected. I hate to keep throwing out so many loose comparisons for reference, but let’s face it: These bands are all top-notch entities that make fine company, so having such comparisons drawn to your work is no small compliment! I have nothing negative to say about this record whatsoever. I was hooked from the moment I first sampled Process of Guilt’s work online, and the full album solidified those sentiments and then some. A great recording and great layout simply round out the package, making for a complete winner for all involved. Superbly well done, and highly recommended. I’ll certainly be curious to see what comes next for Process of Guilt, as well as anticipating future releases from Major Label Industries. Remarkable.

This is truly impressive work that deserves significantly more attention than many underground endeavors are capable of achieving.
