Good idea. I'm up for this. Good find by the way, very accurate description

I'll start by throwing a softball. Many of you are probably aware of Esoteric, but if you aren't give them a look. They have 4 lengthy tracks on their myspace, and the sound ranges from submerged to bizarre to terrifying.

I've seen CDs, and heard of their Awesomeness, but could never find any samples. Thanks for that.

What description?

Zad, I want more from you. Seriously. This is not an insult. You have a great range of tastes, but rarely share it, you just slap a link out there. Convince me to click on it.

I wondered what EBD meant by good description - they're Irish?

Well, what do you want? A band history? They've yet to release a full-length; tracks on the MySpace are from a demo and an EP, both of which were scored very highly on Metal Archives. If you like Funeral Doom, the odds are you'll like this - slow, heavy, and reverberating, sucking out your ear-wax and violently screwing your brain until you're begging for mercy. For fans of The Used and My Chemical Romance.

Well, maybe not the last bit.

Another awesome band y'all may not be aware of is Lair Of the Minotaur. Describing their influences as Venom meets Sabbath meets Slayer meets Celtic Frost, their music is a punked-up crusty mix of Thrash and Sludge that'll have you headbanging and covering in terror simultaneously! Two albums out, and two limited EPs, with some nice and gorey cover art. They're on Southern Lord. Edit: The drummer's in Pelican!

Glad to help. Your find is quite impressive, I didn't want to diminish that. I'm still listening to that band.

Here is a relatively well-known Australian band, Mournful Congregation. Now they do get quite slow on occasion, but I think they vary tempos much better than most funeral doom bands. They are also found of acoustic sections. Only samples here.

Finland is hope to many doom bands, including Umbra Nihil, which is related to Aarni-a band the departed Lizardtail reviewed. Here is a full length track. They are cool because they bring non-metal influences to doom.

As always, anyone is welcome to PM me if more interested.

No, bring it on. A big list of good bands is a wonderful addition.

Hmmm, MC aren't really doing it for me. Bit lacking. Trying the UN now, but I like Aarni so this should be good. Edit: it's brilliant. Thanks.

And thankee, Ken.

I generally don't like funeral doom or anything that really drags and drags and drags, it's an acquired taste, I think, one that I haven't fully acquired yet.

However, how about some happy doom? While Heaven Wept! I don't think happy doom is how the band would describe themselves, but I always felt like it sounded quite happy. Hehehe. They're on the slower side, not funeral doom by any means, but definitely a slower style than the uptempo doom I favor.

They had two new albums in the works and sadly Black Lotus Records folder and those albums release dates are up in the air. It sucks as they're one of my favorite doom bands. Great tones, killer vocalist, awesome music. This shit is near perfect...and happy. Check out the myspace page for streams.

While Heaven Wept is always a good rec. I also understand many of you may not be able to get into funeral doom. I totally understand, and even find hard sometimes to like it myself. I'll post some more links over the next few days, and I'll stay clear from funeral doom. I'm not a huge fan of the groovy stuff, but I'll try to keep it clear of the superslow.

-Glad you liked the Umbra Nihil Zad, that guy is a flipping genius.
-BTW, I actually bought that Umbra Nihil album from CenturyMedia, of all places.

I officially like this thread

Nice choices in here so far, especially emperor with the Umbra Nihil.

Ken, have you heard Transient? Kind of a hybrid power/prog band on the fringes of doom. You can link up to samples through their website.

Also, I always try to push 3D House of Beef when I can, since they are teh awesome. Their myspace has samples.

For the traditional vibe, Northwinds is some good stuff. Their website has samples here.

Good find Zad, I had not heard Wreck of the Hesperus yet. That was awesome.

Not strictly Doom, but Jucifer are very good indeed. It's basically a heavy indie rock band, but a brilliant one. Great female vocalist. Just signed to Relapse, of all people. Check them out:

Transient!! Wow! What a fucking recommendation. I got home a little while ago to find it waiting for me, just listened through once and holy shit is this an amazing album!! It reminds me a lot of Dream Theater's quieter moments, but far better, catchier and less gay.

Thanks, dude!

I agree very much with the title of this thread. :D

I received the Umbra Nihil / Aarni split from lizardtail while he was still posting here. Very good stuff. I'll try some of the samples here when I get home. I am at work right now => no speakers and a boss who has no love for doom.

If any of the posters here (seasoned doomsters or curious newcomers to the genre) are interested I'll be happy to upload sample songs from my collection. Maybe that way I can sow some seeds of doooom on these forums  . If any of you want to taste something before buying it do PM me and I'll see what I can do.
