I really haven't heard ANY doom metal before, but I've listened to some "power-doom", etc. bands and have liked what I've heard. Anyways, I'm just looking for a good doom CD to start with...I was thinking Candlemass but I really have no idea who is good and who isn't.

For a starting band? I don't know. I would honestly suggest Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus as starting bands. They're heavy and epic, but they're not always slow. They have a lot of faster tunes. Listening to these bands will give him a good idea of what he likes, fast or slow doom. If he likes both, go with Reverend and the like.

If you're into Heavy Metal, check out Cathedral's latest. Gates Of Slumber, Wall Of Sleep are good. The best way, though, is probably through Stoner. Kyuss, Acid Bath...

All the previous recommendations are good, plus try: YOB, Saint Vitus, Sleep, Paradise Lost (Gothic, in particular), Witchfinder General, Electric Wizard, or Orange Goblin. Try some harsher stuff too, like: Esoteric (not The Esoteric), Shape of Despair, Winter, Novembers Doom, or Evoken.

Novembers Doom is great especially their last album...

I never understood why people liked Winter. But Adam has some great recommendations. I'll mention Dolorian since no one else has.

Saturnus, Daylight Dies (Dismantling Devotion), Draconian, Swallow The Sun (The Morning Never Came, see review on MR), Shape of Despair (Funeral Doomdeath, also see review on MR), Agalloch (see review).

Um...most of these bands are not good starting points.

Ohhhh, can it moderaturd! Yes they are. If you can't get into doom using the recommendations in this thread, then you don't like doom, it's pretty simple.



Yeah, they're simplistic and their schtick has been perfected by others, but without them, we may not have diSEMBOWELMENT or Evoken so they'll always hold a special place for me.

I don't know. He asked where he should start. I think a lot of the suggestions here may be too much for a starting point. I think doom is a pretty overwhelming genre as a whole. There are so many different kinds of bands! Whenever I suggest a band to someone I try to suggest the catchy, uptempo stuff with clean vocals. That usually sets them at ease, then they can start digging deeper. I just don't think suggesting My Dying Bride as a starting point makes sense.

Then maybe he should start with Black Sabbath...

Well, I see your point. That's why I said to try Sleep, Witchfinder General, Orange Goblin, Electric Wizard, and so on, first. Then, if you like that, give the harsher stuff a try (MDB, Novembers Doom, Shape of Despair, etc.).

Doom is very diverse, so if you don't give a newbie a wide variety of stuff to try, they won't really get the picture.

But as a new Doom enthusiast, i will have to say Candlemass Soulitude Aeternus, witchfinder General or St. Vitus, and dont forget to check out Pagan Altar, that was the band that got me hooked on the genre, also there is this band called Krux formed by integrants of Candlemass and Entombed (their singer is in Atvance ) that are very good.

Thanks for the recommendations. I went and checked out some Candlemass, Saint Vitus, and Soulitude Aeturnus on YouTube...I'm not sure how much I like it, as it sounds like metal, but slower. I think doom might become something like Tool for me--I like it, but I can only listen to it so often. I don't know, I have other stuff higher on my "to buy" list, but I'll keep these bands in mind. Soulitude Aeturnus was my favorite out of the three.

Don't hesitate to try out the harsher stuff too, such as Esoteric, Evoken, and Dolorian. You may actually like that stuff on first listen, I did. There is a lot of doom out there that sounds nothing like the three bands you listened to.

Nobody said Pentagram and I am shocked at that. I don't even like Doom but I dig Pentagram. They have a greatest hits on Peaceville that is awesome. I would def suggest Witchcraft as well which I like and as I none doom fan if would good to start with.

Dammit! I always forget a few. Indeed, Pentagram kicks ass.
