I'm looking for other bands which sound like The Gathering do these days? Their Home/Souvenirs style sound rather than their older gothier stuff. Does anyone know any bands similar to them as the closest I've got so far is Ambeon, which sounds too much like Arjen's other projects to be as good.

On the gothy side, are there other bands out there like Katatonia? By that I mean doomy gothic stuff but without a singer who whines like a little bitch (see My Dying Bride and To/Die/Fore). Basically I'm looking for gothic metal which sounds more underground and less like H.I.M crap.

Thanks

Here are two off the top of my head:

TAPPING THE VEIN

Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/tappingthevein

Website: http://www.tappingthevein.com

THE CREST (don't be fooled by the heavier songs they put online)

Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/thecrestband

Website: http://www.the-crest.net

Excellent, thanks.

I like Tapping The Vein, sound like a cross of Lullacry and the Gathering.
The Crest site sucks in Firefox and my IE is playing about so I'll check that out later.

Found a few bands myself to look at: TeNK seem pretty good but are without any full length albums right now so I'll have to keep an eye out.
Just checking out Pale Forest now as they've toured with The Gathering before.

If you really want bands that sound like that, ignore Ken's tepid recommendations and try these (Kidding, I like both bands he mentioned a lot, I met Heather from Tapping the Vein when they were touring with PL, cool girl):

Manes -
Monumensium - Ad Naseum
Third and the Mortal - Memoirs
Antimatter - Saviour and Lights out (Saviour is tons better though)
Anathema - Fine day to exit

I would probably throw in Flowing Tears, the last couple of Darzamat albums and Artrosious as well (later period only)

I'm at work, you turd! That was the quickest I could come up with. And Flowing Tears are more like Mandylion The Gathering than the newer stuff. Anathema is a good choice, but not if he wants female vocals.

Sorry, but he does. I can cope with Novembre style doom vocals but not whiny ones.

Cheers for that! I have some Flowing Tears already (Jade and Serpentine, might get Razorbliss) and like that too, but I've got lots a stuff like that and little like The Gathering.
I have a Darzamat album - In The Flames of Black Art (1996) which sounds really dark and doomy and deathy so I'll take your word for it that they mellow a bit.
Wasn't sure about Anathema as I've heard from lots of people (and this site's reviews) that they are crap. But I'll ive it a bash.
As for the rest thanks, I'll go look for samples now.

A fine day to exit and Natural Disaster have a few songs each with female vocals. Antimatter - Saviour is the bomb though.

I have in the flames but Onriad is def a lot different, mellow and more electronics based, The male vocals are weird to say the least but they work.

Anathema it depends on what you like, Heavy death doom for A Silent Enigma, Crestfallen EP, Pentecost III etc. Floyd worship - Eternity, Floyd + Goth worship Alternative IV, Modern Rock for Judgement, A fine day to exit and A natural Disaster, I love it all but that gives you a pretty good idea of what to buy based on your tastes.

Dude, the singer in Katatonia whines a bit as well  (See Discouraged Ones)

You may like Audrey Horne, kind of similar to depressive rock-style Katatonia. But maybe a little too HIM-ish.

And For the Gathernig, Have you heard Headcontrolsystem or Green Carnation?
