Recently I have grown very fond of stoner/doom metal. With lizardtail gone I don't know who the local authority on the field is (afeigel perhaps?), so I'll post this as an open question.

I need some recommendations, particularly in the vein of Electric Wizards Dopethrone, Sleeps Holy Mountain and Dopesmoker. Any recommendations within the genre are very welcome though.

I don't know exactly what appeals to me in these records; I just know that they do, so I can't really be more specific.

Your help will be very much appreciated.

Try Earth, like Bluesy but very slow. The more rocky Boris albums.

As for the rest:

Kyuss
Allhelluja
Melvins
Acid Bath
High On Fire
Sheavy
Goatsnake
Yob
The Inbreds
Bongzilla
Cathedral
Ramesses
The Hidden Hand
Obiat
End Of Level Boss
Fireball Ministry
Om
Porn
Wall Of Sleep
Scissorfight

Real stoner doom to me is doom that mixes drug use with occult themes.. some classic stoner doom is the obvious Black Sabbath, Witchfinder General, Saint Vitus, Pentagram, Stone Bunny (not really doom but oh well) etc....

some modern stuff, Reverend Bizarre, Witchcraft, Burning Saviours, Church Of Misery, Bongzilla, Wall Of Sleep etc etc

Some of the less angry Burnt By The Sun stuff is pretty good. Early Neurosis?

I guess there is Earth.

Did you think much of Endtyme, Eisenfaust?

Eisenfaust, heed Zad's list, as it is pretty much a who's who of the stoner doom genre (Well done,Zad!), especially YOB and Om (featuring Al Cisneros of Sleep). Some others I would try:

Abdullah
Dragonauta (they have a split with Abdullah that is awesome)
Grand Magus
Noothgrush
3D House of Beef

Let me know if you need any help tracking any of this stuff down.

I'll just comment a bit on the recommendations I already know (to better reveal my preferences) and then I'll go and check some of the others.

Earth - I have Earth 2 - Special Low Frequency Version which I like but I have to be in the right mood.

Boris - I tend to like their more droning and heavy stuff better than their rocky stuff. Best Boris album I have heard: Feedbacker

Kyuss - I have the s/t (sky valley?) and it doesn't do much for me. I don't know why. A little too easy perhaps.

Cathedral - I have The Ethereal Mirror which I find rather mediocre and Endtyme (thanks again rio. Know that I have legally bought it by now) which I like very much for the same reasons as rio.

Black Sabbath - I have truckloads and I love (most of) it.

Witchfinder General - I have Death Penalty and it is sweet. It is a little to NWOBHMish perhaps. Not that I don't like NWOBHM but it is not exactly what I'm looking for this time around.

Saint Vitus - I have Born too Late and Mournful Cries. Both are excellent. I tend to like Born too Late the most of those two.

Reverend Bizarre - I have II: Crush the Insects and In the Rectory... and I love both.

I have only heard a little Neurosis and I found it not very stoned and a bit too hardcoreish perhaps. I'm planning to give them another chance.

Are there any other Dopesmoker's?

Thanks. I'll do that.

I'll go and check out some of the recommendations. Then I'll return with some comments. In the meantime recommend away if something should come to mind.

Do you remember which album you listened to? They have undergone a bit of a transformation, so if you listened to Through Silver in Blood only, I'd advise you to try The Eye of Every Storm or Times of Grace. I still wouldn't put in the same category as Electric Wizard, though.

I think it was some split with Tribes of Neurot(?) or something like that. I don't remember the name.

Not yet. I'm trying to locate some samples. Where did you find yours?

 High on Fire is fronted by Matt Pike. I'll take that as a good sign.

Yeah, Matt Pike kicks ass. HoF are not as doomy as Sleep, though still awesome. Om, the other Sleep spinoff, sounds much more like the original.

I didn't know you appreciated stoner doom mr. Kath.

Just streamed some Om from Pandora. Pretty good stuff. The vocals were a little tame but I liked it very much.
