I just borrowed The Tatterdemalion Express from a friend, and I'm blown away by it. These are my first steps in the Doom genre, and I certainly like what I'm hearing. However, that friend of mine said that Mar de Grises is a somewhat special band and he does not know any comparable bands. So now I'm asking the knowledgeable people here: do you?

Hell yeah, good choice! The answer to your question is no. Mar de Grises play doomdeath, but play a very unique style of it. They have a very ranging sound that many doomdeath bands lack. I've seen them compared to early My Dying Bride (though I don't really agree), so you may want to give that a shot. However, if you like Mar de Grises, you will probably like a lot of doom. Check out some of the recommendation threads, there's some good ones in there.

yeah, I wish I knew about some other bands that had as good an atmosphere as Mar de Grises. You could check out some of the bands that are on the cusp of doom-death and funeral doom, such as Shape of Despair and Mournful Congregation.. they don't play the same style but you might find them to share certain elements.

shit, I recommend Mournful Congregation to everyone.

Umm...I don't know what this band sounds like, never heard 'em, but someone said doom-death and I say SLUMBER!

RAPTURE

More samples HERE, but they have parenthesis in the links and those don't translate in BB code.
