Post subject: Why Does Evanescence Suck?
PostPosted: Fri Jan 13, 2006 10:05 pm
Someone give me a valid argument as to why Evanescence sucks, if bands like Flowing Tears, Elis, The Gathering, and Lacuna Coil don't. If you don't like any of those bands, don't respond.

I'd like someone post a good argument as to why they suck without bringing up Hot Topic fanboys or that guy that sings in "Bring Me To Life" or anything else that doesn't focus solely on the music (that is no different than a hundred other female-fronted bands out there that metalheads like).

Discuss.

Because Evanescence are basically a dumbed-down commercialized version of the aforementioned bands.

How do you figure that? They're no more commercial than either of those bands. You take that guy out of "Bring Me To Life" and they'd be nothing right now. Someone at their label had the foresight to know what putting that guy on that song would do.

The band submitting to their producer's/label's request to include white boy-rapping in their song is reason enough for me to hate them. Pussies.

Take the Gathering and Evanescence. Which one has more artistic integrity?

Agreed.

A band like the Gathering innovated(Yes they have a female singer). Evanesence merely caters to the mainstream. Plus, they use big words to appear intellectual, but they use them wrong. Writing a lyric like, "You captivate me in resonating ways" is plain embarrassing.

ill go against the grain here.

There not that bad. They have there weakneses and shit but you can see that in any band.
I see no real reason people need to be upset about Evanescence when we have bands like the used, coheed and cambria, my chemical romance etc....

Did you just say "label requesting"? You can't be that ignorant. Labels don't request shit! They demand. They dictate. They OWN.

Evanescence were around for YEARS before getting signed! They played moody, goth rock from the beginning. They did not change when they got signed! Anyone agreeing with the above statement is ill-informed.

What did The Gathering innovate? Is The Gathering's Mandylion so different from Evanescence's Fallen? No way. Is Fallen so different from their first full-length release, Origin? No way. But...is Mandylion so different from Almost A Dance and Always? The difference is tenfold. Yes, musically they're not very different, but you take away a guttural death metal vocalist and replace him with an angelic female voice that is a HUGE difference. Why isn't anyone claiming The Gathering sold out for mainstream success?

Evanescence played the same style of music these other bands play from day one. The difference?: they achieved mainstream popularity. We see it now with Lacuna Coil. Prior to Comalies being released Lacuna Coil was reverred among the female-fronted metal bands, nary a metal fan had something negative to say. Now the majority opinion is that they've sold out, they're nu-metal, blah-blah-blah. What has changed? Their popularity.

The reason I posed this question is because it drives me insane to hear music fans display negativity towards bands based on their popularity, which is exactly what I hear when people discuss Evanescence.

If you strip away the glitz and glamour that MTV and mainstream media has place upon this band, they're truly not different. They just aren't. Now, I understand people generally may not like this band, but when I ask for reasons people generally can't come up with anything that makes sense. Hence my question.

I must admit I am a sucker for the whole female fronted Goth Rock thing and Evanescence is no exception.

I see Evanescence as kind of a gateway band if you will. Every genre has them.

That being said I do not consider them anywhere near the top of the pile and doing things like adding the white guy rapping was a blatant attempt to grab a foothole in the mainstream. Lets be honest though, any of these bands with the right marketing push could have easily been propelled into the mainstream in the same manner.

Case in point: At my job I am lucky enough to work where I can listen to music. When I play Nile my fellow co-workers say things like "How can you listen to that kill your mother, rape a goat music?" When I play a band like Midnattsol they are curious as to who the band with the chick singer is and want to hear more. I have even been asked to burn several bopies of that cd.

The Gathering = ability to write good songs

Evanescence = Linkin Park (not as bad as) + Tori Amos (not nearly as good as in the least) + Mascara

Because they like to suck...

Actually i dont think there is a way to convince you, it appears to me that you have already made your mind, but let me try:

1 - They are Nu-Metal
2 - They have a female singer who sings like shit
3 - They are Nu-Metal

Of course you can always say:

*You are out of your tits!!!

1 - No they are not
2 - Opinion
2 - No they are not

No. One their first single, "Bring Me To Life," the label had a guy from 12 Stones add vocals after the song was recorded already. Unfortunately his quasi-rap/rock vocals sounded like Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park. Hence all the unfounded Linkin Park comparisons.

Look, I do like Evanescence, I've said it before. What I am asking here is for you to elaborate. Come on, you say they ARE nu-metal. How so? How are they nu-metal and Flowing Tears are not? Amy Lee sings like shit? Jesus! By what standard? That's ridiculous. She has an excellent voice!

I am asking for some to not just say they are this, they are that, but give reasoning behind it. Logical reasoning.

Eyesore-You bring up some good points, but I still genuinely dislike Evanescence.

The Gathering's Mandylion featured 6 minute songs and even tribal drumming.

I have only heard the 4 singles from Evanescence's Fallen so maybe some of their non-single songs aren't 3 minute pop songs featuring chorus ad-nauseum?

Don't get me wrong, I like Amy Lee's voice, but I consider Bring Me To Life one of the worst songs ever.
