The new Epica is brilliant, my pick for album of the year.

I agree. I love how they've not gone soft at all, considering how Epica has gotten more popular recently.

Hmm, I never liked Epica before, but this sounds rather good. Will look further into it.

What's better is how they did sort of go soft on Consign to Oblivion (not in a major way but it sort of suggested that's where they'd be ehaded in future) and then came roaring back with the third album.

Haven't heard this one yet but I'm looking forward to it.

Divine Conspiracy their 3rd release was softer than consign to oblivion (2nd release) IMO. Glad to hear they went back to harsher things on their 4th release.

Are you kidding me? Just compare the amount of vocals from Mark Jansen on the two albums in question for starters. The intensity of the drumming, the riffs, everything....

Design Your Universe is my favorite album by them so far. I think Mark Janssen finally found the perfect balance he was looking for between soundtrack composing and heavy metal:)

I'll be going to see them for the 2nd time on the 17th of Feb. This time with Simone on vocals as last time they had Amanda Somerville filling in while she recovered from a staph infection.

As for me, I didn't really noticed any significant turn towards the "harsher", but rather a classic Epica-style album.

Certainly a great album, but in my opinion far from being their best work. (2nd, and 3rd)

...either way, their concert rocked :dio:
