Greetings and Salutations, I have been curious as to what exactly is "Dark Metal" for a few years now, but have put it off do to my thinking it is Gothic and Black metal thrown together. Maybe with or without doom. Am I wrong? I can only assume so, it would be great to hear the real answer, I've been scouring the web, from Metal Archives to Wikipedia and while some bands get a bit of the label, there is no definition provided. Oh, and some bands that ply this trade would be helpful as well.

Thanks in advance!!!

Sentenced is always the first that comes to mind when I hear that term.

Thanks guys. Seems to be a pretty diverse term thrown around then.

A pretty diverse made-up term. You could fit everyone in there, really, depending... it does seem to be most stuff like Katatonia, Paradise Lost, Moonspell - metal what is dark, with probably a bit of goth in there.

You know, I've been thinking that myself for years. Dark Metal? hmmm....What comes to my mind is Void of Silence(album Criteria666) because it has everything in there. I would say "Dark" and "Doom" goes in hand rather than Black/Death. Try just one particular song by Janvs "Vega" from Italy, that is my "perfect" Dark Metal example. Good Topic but isn't metal so complex that you can't even begin with any true answers?

Your the guy with the Cemetary Demo. :dio: Your the Man!!

Hmm... as the only other person here who's listened to these guys, I'd just call them Proggy Black Metal rather than Dark Metal, not much Gothic-ness going on.

So, you know that particular song? It just has a perfect mixture of Ambient/Doom/Black/Death/Goth. Especially the part when the singer starts singing in Italian. the Best!!!The song reminds me of Oathean "The Wood Cutting Doll." Just Truly Haunting.

The Black Torture screams in the back ground, not over-powering as the music takes your attention while the echos are behind the curtains?

You're a douche sometimes. I've heard Janvs before.

It's a stupid made up term that is completely meaningless.

It was kinda snooty to assume you're so kvlt that you're the only one who's listened to a band out of all the people here.

O Gawd. Remind me never to engage in sarcasm, for fear of people finding me snooty when I say that I've heard a band when no-one else has. I reviewed both their albums + usual moans from me about no-one reading my reviews = amusing reference to being the only other person who has heard of a band.

Apart from the other bands mentioned, another band you can check out is Dawn Of Relic. Check out their album One Night In Carcosa. It was my first Dark Metal album and is a personal favourite.

I'm pretty sure Katatonia fits the bill perfectly
