Out of the blue came this one, for me at least. I liked this band a lot back in 93, when they released a debut EP, but then I never heard of them again. And now I stumbled across this jewel ( and I also discovered they did release another album, back in 98). So apparently Dawn Of Winter releases albums every ten years or so. And I have no idea how the other one sounds, but The Peaceful Dead is nothing short of a doom masterpiece. I haven't heard such well crafted mournful laments since Candlemass' Nightfall, I think (incidentally, the very first song pays tribute to doom as a genre and to Black Sabbath, Pagan Altar and Candlemass, as bands). I'm not gonna bother to describe it better, because frankly words fail me. It's just too much emotion in this music for me to be able to translate into words. Maybe Adam or another reviewer will dare do it, and I hope they do it. I'm just curious if anybody else here knows about them. If not, if you've ever had even a passing interest in doom, I strongly encourage you to look for this album. |
