Who here enjoyed King of the Grey Islands??? I thought it was the best thing I've heard in doom. Forgive me if I'm far off. I don't listen to much of any doom metal...

It's a great release and all, but there's far better out there. For example, Candlemass' older releases.

It's a great album, it made me a fan of theirs. I've just lately started to explore their previous work and I'd say Nightfall is absolutely top notch, even better than King Of The Grey Island. Messiahs vocals might be a bit harder to get into for some though.

Thanks. I needed to know that. Last doom metal I listened to was actually Candlemass's first release. I don't really listen to doom but I might start again.

I would say that if you liked King of the Grey Islands, which is an awesome album, you'll find a lot to like as far as doom is concerned, besides early Candlemass. For starters, try:

Saint Vitus
Krux
Reverend Bizarre
Solitude Aeturnus
Cathedral
Trouble
Pagan Altar
Witchfinder General

The last two will be much tougher to track down, but with that list you will have a pretty good start, and it's only the tip of the iceberg.

I think Rob Lowe is the best Candlemass vocalist (haven't heard the middle albums though), but Tales of Creation is my favourite album by them. I just  concept albums.

Also Adam's list is all good stuff. Sahg are awesome too.

^What he said, but add Pentagram to your list.

Could we make a suggestion for Concept Of God as well? Good stuff. :dio:

Haha! Mats Leven's doom band. Are they actually good then? I didn't think they'd be that great.

Hellz yes! Leif Edling is in the band, which virtually guarantees doom asskickery of the highest order.

It's just funny, b/c when I think of Mats Leven I think of Neo-classical power metal to the fullest. He is one of my all time favorites though. I should check this band out.

Youll be surprised at how good he is at singing doom metal.

I saw Krux at Sweden Rock last year. They were fantastic. Frederik Akeson is a beast of a lead player.

Are other Reverend Bizarre albums as awesome as So Long Suckers?

In The Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend/Return to the Rectory and Harbinger of Metal aren't quite as good but still kick ass... Crush the Insects is a little weaker (it still has some totally awesome songs like Doom Over The World though)

In the Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend is the only album that comes close in my opinion, though all their albums are very good. If you liked So Long Suckers, you would surely like the rest of their output.

Man that is like the best song ever.

"Armies of evil and DOOM!"

I see what you did there. :dio:

Yeah I think I made a thread about Krux a while back. Very cool band but not scuzzy enough for me at the moment :)

Haven't heard KotGI, but I definitely would take Candlemass' older material over their new any day of the week.
