I was checking them out a few days ago.. doomy, but with that heavy metal swagger. Death Penalty had some pretty cool songs.

Any recommendations? Preferably a band that sounds like Candlemass.

Solitude Aeternus and Isole, perhaps. Or that Tristitia album I reviewed elsewhere. All the other Tristitia albums are doom-death, though.. there simply isn't much epic doom out there

I've only recently discovered funeral doom and I can say I like it a lot. It sounds a lot like black metal and my favourite band so far, Stabat Mater, is actually the side project of one of the big names in BM, Mikko Aspa.

I'm like the 15th person to say this here but I have heard a few Candlemass songs and I was very impressed so I'm retrieving
some of their albums and I'm open to any recommendations.

and I like Xasthur if it has a place here.

Epicus Doomicus Metallicus and Nightfall are the two albums they'll probably never beat, but the latest, self-titled CD is a great return to form too.. as for Xasthur, it's more Suicide Black than Doom but I believe they goes hand in hand, along with Bleak, Make a Change.. Kill Yourself, Forgotten Tomb etc etc.. but Funeral Doom's the accepted bridge between doom and black as far as I know. I listen to all that stuff and love it, haha.
oh, I don't know much about Stabat Mater but I heard their side of the Crushing the Holy Trinity thing.. will I have to buy that thing or is it available on another release?

Candlemass (like everyone else), Thergothon, Draconian, Sentenced (if they count - even if they don't, they're still awesome).

I listen to a little doom from time to time. Mostly Thergothon (their demo Fhtagn-Nagh Yog-Sothoth was re-released recently by the way) and Nortt. From there I cross over in depressive black.

I love doom, second favorite genre to black. Esoteric to My dying Bride, Cathedral to Unholy.

Have any of you heard The Eternal yet?

Go to their site (http://www.the-eternal.com) and listen to clips. Not traditional epic doom, but a good mix of doom and To/Die/For-type goth.

Also, Last Chapter is a good band to check out. Robert Lowe (Solitude Aeturnus vocalist) did guest vocals for their first album, The Living Waters, and it's excellent. It's like prog-doom. Great stuff.

They released a second album called Path To Always, which is hard to find so I can't comment on it as I don't have it, but BNR Metal says it's "Another fine doom metal album..." so it's probably worth getting.

You can read about them at BNR Metal or at NO LIFE TIL METAL

Has anyone mentioned While Heaven Wept? They're another excellent epic doom metal band!

Checked out the Eternal, they have an interesting sound but I'm not really sure I like them.

While Heaven Wept is pretty cool, if I rarely listen to them.

Yeah The Eternal are a tough one to slap that doom label on, but it's there. They reminded me a lot of that To/Die/For and For My Pain type stuff.

While Heaven Wept has always been what I called Happy Doom. Hahaha. The music and sound almost defies the term "doom."

Yes, this poor little doom forum could use more hits. I would be hard pressed to pick a favorite subgenre of Doom, since I love them all. I listen to alot of Doom, such as: Candlemass, Shape of Despair, Sleep, Reverend Bizarre, Mar de Grises, Count Raven, Solitude Aeturnus, Winter, Cathedral, Saint Vitus, Paradise Lost, etc.

MetalNESS - try Count Raven

Those are all good bands.. I can't get into Saint Vitus although I acknowledge that they're good and influential. Oh well.

I said Grand Magus was stoner earlier.. listening to their latest album that's pretty damn wrong, it's gotten past bluesy and all the way into fully blown heavy metal, as far as I can tell. I like 'em but the singer occasionalyl reminds me of that guy from Nickelback. They're both good singers, but.. ugh, Nickelback.

I know what you mean. It seems that Paradise Lost has turned into a groove metal band, if the Draconian Times album is any indication. Oh well, such is the way of the music business.

I can see the comparison of the Grand Magus singer with the guy from that pop band (don't want to type the word :) ), luckily the rest of the band didn't follow suit.

Totally off topic, I'm still trying to track down some Dragonauta, but to no avail. If you know of a file sharing program that has some, let me know.

Good point. It's not something one would want to listen while in a doom mood. Power/doom! It's wierd combination.

Don't kill me for saying this cuz I don't know much about doom but Candlemass doesn't sound very doomish to me (at least not in the sense of My Dying Bride and stuff, it doesn't sound sad). At least their latest album (the only one I listened to so far).
